Thunderbird - Slow Starts / High RAM Usage

really, i am. it takes up about 500000 KB of ram to start up, and doesn't start up until like 7 minutes after i click it. it also doesnt respond almost every time i use it and it takes forever to compact folders. and im running it from my hard drive!!! its really frustrating. and its even worse when its run on my flashdrive. i have like 400 messages all in local folders, none on the server, and i use gmail. (and yes im sure i configured it correctly, for you bold enough to ask). Oh yeah....and, um....HELP!!!!!!!!!

Some Notes

First off, welcome to the forum Mikaeel! I'm not sure if you ever received a formal welcome.

I'd just like to start off with some points about these forums. In future posts, please attempt to use a descriptive topic as it's much easier for searching, and helps users determine if they can help. Second, I'd personally suggest that it's not a good call to call those who will be attempting to help you 'stupid', it's not a great way to get help. Finally, capitals letters, bold, and exclamation points are typically not liked when used in conjuction with each other, as it shows impatience (perhaps you are, and I wouldn't blame you) and may just come off as rude to some people.

However, as for your issue, may I ask how other programs run off this flash drive? It's odd that something would take so long to start and have such incredibly high RAM usage. Also, perhaps try running Thunderbird Portable off the desktop / drive on the local computer to see if perhaps your drive is effecting the speed, or if it is just Thunderbird. I might also suggest installing a separate installation beside the currently installed Thunderbird Portable to see if it runs any faster, as perhaps there's just an issue with the installation you have on your device. Hopefully others a little more knowledge with these type of problems can help out soon, but I'd advise you check those in the mean time.

As one of the apparently stupid people, I'm going to ask about your configuration.

I personally have been using tbird since it was first around, and many other mail clients for many years before that, and I'm certainly not "sure i configured it correctly" enough to be arrogant about it.

The obvious point that springs to mind, if you are using local folders, is how often do you compact them? In some circumstances, deleted email is left where it was, just flagged as deleted, so unless you compact the folder, it just gets bigger and bigger. I have seen folder files in the past that reached tens or hundreds of megabytes and yet only had 3-4 text-only emails in them, totalling a few kilobytes of actual mail. Needless to say, it was excessively slow starting.

Mimetypes.rdf

You probably set Thunderbird Portable to open up a file using an app on another drive (which isn't supported). There may be a bug in the current launcher that causes it to have issues. Just browse to your profile folder (ThunderbirdPortable\data\profile) and delete the file Mimetypes.rdf. If that fixes it, please let us know. I may do a revision if it continues to be an issue even though users shouldn't be setting it to open apps on other drives.

mimetypes.rdf--using app on another drive

john, from your statement of using an app on another drive--i'm using t-bird portable on a flash, but ms word, excel, adobe reader, etc., is on the computer hard drive (c:) that i happen to be plugged into...

so when i get an attachment that is a document, spreadsheet, etc., t-bird portable opens the app on the c: drive ("...another drive (which isn't supported)")...

i have had the issue with mimetypes.rdf growing to a huge size and freezing t-bird portable completely (when i try to open a message with an attachment), so i end up deleting mimetypes.rdf and then all is back to normal for a while...i just had to delete it again earlier this week...(i think this is the 3rd or 4th time in the past 6 months?)

so...perhaps there is a bug?

John, it's not on just on trying to open apps on another drive. Even if you set it to oped an app on the same USB drive as where TBP is located, mimeTypes.rdf gets corrupted.
Here is an extract of mimeTypes.rdf just after setting the location of the app to use to open FireFoxPortable on the same drive for a .html file extension:

NC:path="Q:\Program Files\FirefoxPortable\FirefoxPortable.exe"

Now, if TBP is shut down and launched again, the above lines change to:

NC:path="Q:Q:\Program Files\Program FilesQ:\Program Files\FirefoxPortableQ:\Program Files\FirefoxPortable.exe"

As you can see TBP would not be able to find this file. The next time TBP is launched, that line doubles in size again ... etc. This how the file grows and takes longer to load. If the file is now deleted, TBP will create a new file without any absolute file references in it, so it will work until next time you try to open an attachment that requests a new app.
It would be great if this file corruption could be fixed.

Thuunderbird slow start

I too was having the same problem with slow starts. Watching the start from Process Explorer the Portable App wrapper would start then consume about 50% CPU for a number of minutes before getting Thunderbird itself started.
Removing the Mimetypes file corrected the problem.

about the mimetypes.rdf file

about the mimetypes.rdf file, what is it for and what causes it. If its not important, is there a way to delete it every time you close TB or stop it from being produced, so u don't have to delete it every time TB starts to slow down.

for me it works somehow

I tried to use first normal mime types as they are stored in registry (systems native links to apps). This seems not to change the mimetype file in my case. doc will open word on the PC , jpg the windows viewer for picts etc, pdf will open the pdf viewer stated in the registry. mimetype remains still the same.
Then I tried to connect client for displaying jpg on the stick. Works fine so far no problem.
Then for doc the sticks open office writer, still all ok.
To me it looks as the problem start only when app is linked in the TB which is not the default of the system otherwise and is on other drive.
