GIMp Portable won't launch

I installed GIMp Portable to my 32GB OCZ ATV pen drive. I have a number of other portable apps on here, including your VideoLAN portable (not the latest - waiting for more reported stability)

Anyway, two of your apps simply won't launch, whether I call for them from PStart or go directly to them in windows explorer and double click them. The two are GIMP Portable and Celestia Portable.

Trying to launch them simply does nothing. I get a microsecond of hourglass, then nothing. They don't show up in task manager. They never launch.

Additional info: I'm trying to run them on two different WinXP Pro PCs, the USB stick is formatted FAT32 w/ default allocation. Every other portable app launches fine (I have about 10 other apps on it).

Side note: Celestia will launch if I bypass your CelestiaPortable.exe wrapper launcher, and go directly to Celestia.exe. I haven't tried it with GIMP. At any rate, I figure launching them directly will result in leaving info on the host PC, and I don't want to do that.

Any ideas? Thanks for any help.

I too am having some difficulties with GIMP not launching

In my case, GIMP Portable will launch just fine on my Windows 2000 Pro SP4 system and my sister's Windows XP Pro SP3 laptop. For some reason though, it refuses to launch on my XP Home SP3 desktop. I get a few seconds of hourglass, and then I get a generic "gimp-2.6.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." error message with no further (comprehensible) explanation. If I click through the right links and such, I can get all the usual "BSOD"-like garble that claims to be an explanation, but nothing that actually makes any sense (if it said that a .dll was missing or something, that i could handle -mildly amused smirk-). Anyway, I don't much think that mine is a problem with GIMP Portable as much as it is a problem with something buried deep within the OS, but any help solving the problem would be appreciated =).

As an afterthought, it just occurred to me while typing this that that particular computer is powered by a VIA C3 Samuel2, so I may be having a CPU compatibility issue (wouldn't be a first; quick time has issues with that CPU as well).

Local Install?

Can you try installing it locally temporarily and see if it works? Also be sure you're using the latest release as it fixes a couple bugs.

Hopefully tomorrow when I have some free time

I'll try to do a local install. I am using the latest actually, although I did try switching back to the previous version with and without the help system installed. Seeing as how I have no trouble launching on my sister's laptop (XP Pro) and our main computer (2K Pro), I'm pretty sure it's either a glitch in my XP Home install or a CPU compatibility issue. I'm not sure if you're familiar with it or not, but the VIA C3 isn't anything like an Intel or AMD chip. It does do a reasonable job of translating usually, but I did have a problem with it completely freezing up on Apple's Quick Time software (actually, the system would immediately reset as if someone had cycled the power - CPUZ has the same effect). I'll try to post the results of the local install attempt after I test that out. Wish me luck...

Edit:

I got at that quite a bit sooner than I thought I would. I installed the latest version of GIMP from the site linked to by the GIMP Portable page. Installation went smoothly, as expected, but the local install refuses to start with the exact same generic error as before. Looks like it's a problem here on my end and not easy to diagnose :P. C'est La Vie. I use GIMP mostly on my main PC under Ubuntu, so GIMP portable only gets used when I'm at school or at our family PC (where it does still run). My XP Home system is used primarily to do the Portable App installations, backup, and updating of ClamWin's database. I never would have known that GIMP wouldn't launch had I not been checking to see what version I had installed the other day!

On a side note, although I use Ubuntu as my primary OS and run MacOSX Tiger on an old iBook when out and about, I still use my portable apps on our main PC and at school quite often. Now that I've been using them for a couple of years, I'm not sure how I ever got along without them!

GIMP

I've seen this error reporting with GIMP itself in connection with the 2.6.x releases. Have you tried a local version on the same PC? If it fails with the same issue - as I suspect it will - it's GIMP itself and you'll need to ask them about it.

Of note, from some of my research, it appears this is a GTK issue and has affected Pidgin, Wireshark, GIMP and others. It appears that GTK is unable to detect your display properties properly. Is there anything else on your PC that may affect it? There are reports that Comodo Firewall interferes with all of these apps.

I have comodo firewall, avast antivirus on my pc .. could be any number of things

had noticed portable pidgin misbehaving but he latest version of that seems OK now

Disable/Uninstall Comodo?

Could you disable Comodo and try again? Or maybe temporarily uninstall it? Of all the firewall software, Comodo has been the most problematic with portable software across the board.

problem solved

daft ol' me overlooked the obvious - some comodo setting blocking gimp
- was in the defense+ computer security policy settings of comodo - set gimpportable.exe & gimp-2.6.exe (in portableapps) to 'trusted' & all is working.
I remember now that comodo usually blocks all exe's on external drives by default - probably to stop some unwanted nasties getting in but a bit of a pest ... like the tea timer on spybot s&d is.

I am having similar problem

I am having similar problem with GIMP not launching here. I am getting an error pop-up that says "GLib-ERROR **: This version of GLib requires NT-based Windows. aborting...". After clicking "OK" another pop-up shows up - "MS Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error! Program: E:\PortableApps\GIMPPortable\App\gimp\bin\gimp-2.6.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information."
After clicking OK here, nothing happens.
Windows XP SP2 Pro, is the NT-based system, obviously, as well as XP SP2 Home.
Reinstall of the Gimp didn't help.
Any advices?

Well, it's narrowed to one

Well, it's narrowed to one machine now. It runs perfectly on all rigs except one I have at work. However, it does not run from GUI only. If I go to E:\PortableApps\GIMPPortable\App\gimp\bin and run gimp-2.6.exe, it runs fine.
So apparently the problem is with launcher.
