Anytime I try to play a wmv file, I get a big black screen like its trying to play the video, and I get the audio, but nothing ever shows for video. I have tried this with multiple files on multiple computers. Any ideas?

WMV is actually lots of different types of files in one, some of which contain DRM (Digital Rights Management aka Digital Restructions Management). DRMed files won't play in anything but Windows Media Player. VLC can play just about everything else. I have it playing a 720p (high def) WMV right now. Try downloading Robotica from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/musicandvideo/hdvideo/cont...
If it works, then the files you were trying earlier are either DRMed, corrupt or use some oddball subcodec. If Robotica won't play, it's usually an issue with the system you're trying to play it on. You could try switching the video mode. It's in Settings - Preferences - Video - Output Modules. Check off Advanced (lower right) and then try some different ones.
Also, if you're using Windows 95/98/Me... remember that none of those are supported by VLC.

well I know they don't have any DRM, but they are all from fileplanet. Most of them are e3 coverage. I am using Windows XP on both computers I have tried it on. Robotica does the same thing as I described before. Also, .mpg files do this same thing as well. I can play others fine, such as .mov and .avi but neither wmv or mpg files will play right. And to top it off, if i close VLC while one of the messed up files (or whatever it is) is playing VLC closes but the audio continues till the end of the file.
Try it on a computer that you know has Windows Media Player 10 installed. VLC uses codecs in WMP10 for WMV3 videos.
