Indeed, there are already plenty of threads about this, but none of them have had a proper answer given. I think someone better answer this question once and for all.

This answers the question I think: http://kb.mozillazine.org/DOM_Inspector#Firefox
To quote:
The [DOM Inspector] is included in Firefox builds since November 2003, but it is an option in the Windows installer. You must choose the "Custom" installation and select "DOM Inspector" in the "Additional components" window.
I think John has just been using the default or basic installation.
I have hosted it on my site here:DOM Inspector

I have searched the forums before. But as Bruce say, there is no answer, just question in those posts.

It's for 1.5.0.4. Is there any other version for 1.5.0.3?
I just got that from my local copy o' Firefox.

Upgrading Firefox from version 1.5.0.4 --> 1.5.0.5 disabled Dom Inspector on both my local and portable installs.
Reintalling the locals is painless, but how involved is it to make a copy of DI to upgrade the portables?
It's bundled with the new release of Mozilla Firefox - Portable Edition. Check the homepage.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Works great! Many thanks.
Had the same problem upgrading to 1.5.0.6. Found a fix that works for both Firefox and Firefox Portable...

This will fix a number of extension issues. Exit Firefox completely, then open your Firefox profile folder and delete these three files:
extensions.ini
extensions.cache
extensions.rdf
The files will be regenerated.
