I've used Revo Uninstaller Portable in the past and always liked it. Moved it into your wrapper, uninstalled an app and no issues so thanks again Hope you maintain this in readiness for when PA.com supports freeware officially.
PortableApps.com Advocate
That's good news. I imagine it shouldn't leave anything behind since it's already portable, but I did a regshot just in case though I don't know how accurate it was since I already have the non-portable version installed on both of my computers.
I was looking at the code for this launcher and noticed that it doesn't really do anything except show a splash screen if you want. It should:
1. On first run, create "settings.ini" in the /Data/settings/ folder.
2. Move "settings.ini" from /Data/settings/ to /App/RevoUninstaller/ so that there will be a settings file for the program to use.
3. Launch RevoUninstaller.exe which will use the settings file that was just moved.
4. When RevoUninstaller.exe is closed, it should move "settings.ini" from /App/RevoUninstaller/ to /Data/settings/ This way the settings will be maintained across sessions. This also allows the PortableApps.com Backup Utility to backup the settings for this program in case the drive fails.
If you need any help with this have a look at the CCleanerPortable Launcher which can be found in the beta testing forums or by searching.
Yeah, as this is my first one I knew there would be stuff I would have to work on. I just wanted to get one working first before I improved it.
That's fine. I still suggest looking at the CCleaner Launcher as it does exactly what you're trying to do. It would be really easy to adapt to your application.
I tried moving some things over and it didn't do anything, so I'll try just taking the whole thing over and renaming some of the things for use with Revo Uninstaller instead. I should have a new release by tonight.
That's probably your best bet. One thing the CCleaner Launcher does that is unnecessary is that it creates a backup of the settings.ini in the \App\DefaultData\settings\ folder. I don't know how useful this is so you could probably leave it out.
Development Test 2 released, but now it doesn't warn the user when Revo Uninstaller is already running, so I'll work on that later.
Thanks
EDIT: No problems here

Any chance of an update to v1.8 plus PAF Online Installer 1.0?
Thanks again
PortableApps.com Advocate
I meant to about a week ago, but I'll need someone to do the icon (since I have no idea how to work with them tbh) and I got caught up with classes. I'll work on it today or tomorrow when I get the chance.
Thanks for keeping up interest.
EDIT: I have the update ready to go, except I just need the icons.
Is this any good?
PortableApps.com Advocate
I think I got it covered, actually. I should have it done sometime tomorrow.
I have permission to bundle the app with the launcher, so I don't need to create an online installer now.
EDIT: Updated to 1.83. Some small things need fixing (that I know of), but I can get to those later.
Just for the record, is there some source where people can confirm that you have permission? An email or forum excerpt perhaps?

I have this app and love it its one of my faves for system clear up. However, having tried your portable version, I have hit a wall. When I click on the launcher, either via the PAMenu or direct from the launcher itself, nothing happens. No splash screen, no app, nothing. Just thought I best let you know.
Also, you state that the launcher is at dev rel 3 but the d/l link says dev rel 1? So which is it?
Good luck getting this sorted and I hope you get this released officially.

I don't remember having that problem, I'll check on it as soon as I can.
Where does it say dev test 3? It was, but then I updated to an entirely new version and thus recycled the dev test version back to 1.
Great, hope it gets sorted.
My apologies, perhaps I missed that bit about the update then

Updated to version 1.85.
Thanks

for a minute i thought it was going to work. but as with Glary Utilities Portable the launcher starts then nothing happens.
at least now I get a splash screen
Great app this. look forward to it being formally released.

What OS are you using and are you using admin rights?
PortableApps.com Advocate
I tested it with my new laptop (with Windows 7) and I can confirm it doesn't work. It did on my last laptop (even before I switched to Chris' Launcher) so I'm a little confused right now. I'll take another look.
I use all my apps on my laptop to prevent hassle with reinstallation on system recovery. It's not too important for me to use portable apps, I do it out of preference. Lately I've had three apps do this same thing: Revo Uninstaller, Glary Utilities and now Total Uninstaller.
Live for an ideal and leave no place in the mind for anything else.
These are all applications that are definitely admin rights reliant. Can I suggest you navigate to the applications folder, right click RevoUninstallerPortable.exe and select run as administrator.
Also try installing a local version of one of the apps you've mentioned to see if the issue happens with them as well.
Please note I have near no experience with Vista so the right click, run as administrator might not be present. However I know it is in Win7.
PortableApps.com Advocate
ok, i tried what you asked, and no problems. But then I already knew this as ive been using these apps for a while, Revo the longest, without probs. Weird how all of a sudden several apps have same problem.
Good luck sorting it
Live for an ideal and leave no place in the mind for anything else.
So when you select run as admin from the PA.c menu, the program (Revo) launches?
It all makes sense now
As I'm using the R34MOD Menu with PAM v1.52 I dont have the option to right click Run As Admin, so this is quite possibly the cause of my problems with the few apps ive recently tested. That is one thing they all have in common!!!
What can I say?
I use the R34 as it has categories, which I desperately need due to the large amount of apps I have, in the region of 200.
Live for an ideal and leave no place in the mind for anything else.
I don't know if that's the problem, actually. I don't use the mod, and it doesn't launch for me (only in Windows 7). I've been meaning to look into the problem, but I started classes a few weeks ago and I've just been pretty busy.
Although I am curious, as for the apps that won't launch for you, do they all use Chris' Launcher by chance?
The other apps I had the same problem as this with are GlaryUtilities and Total Uninstall. At present TU now works ok, but GU seems to have a problem with d/l, unless there's something wrong my end? So not tested that yet.
These two launchers are by prapper, I believe, and he said the problem with his launchers was to do with Admin Rights. May be worth a look?

No, not at all. Revo Uninstaller Portable (the official build from their website) works, but the launcher doesn't. I'll try updating Chris' Launcher soon to see if that helps.

The launcher doesn't actually work at the moment (on some systems), and I'm waiting for a bug to be fixed in the PA.c launcher before I can update it.
You're trying to make me feel guilty, aren't you
I'm looking at it now. Problem is the UAC plug-in's documentation is fairly poor, i.e. only code examples, and I'm not sure whether I'll be able to work out what's happening with $EXEDIR on Wine anyway...

Have you asked on their forum?
sar3th has been testing code for me and along with a few bug fixes and improvements along the way, we've discovered what the issue appears to be; for some reason, the UAC plug-in is running a UNC path, so $EXEDIR ends up a UNC path. So I'm writing a function to convert UNC paths to local paths (there's one which uses nsExec::Exec and
net use
in the NSIS forums but I don't like that solution).I am a Christian and a developer and moderator here.

I think I've fixed this now in the Mercurial repository; if you felt like it you could get it, compile it and test it to see if it works. Or wait for a new release.

I'll try to get to it as soon as I can.
See post for details.
Thanks for the update. I recommend Revo Uninstaller to people and being able to simply copy my Revo Uninstaller Portable to their USB for them to use is extremely easy.
Any download stats?
PortableApps.com Advocate
Dropbox doesn't offer the ability to view download stats, as far as I know. (If it does, someone tell me where to find it).
This is just a small update. I accidentally left a settings file in the App directory. If you already installed DT 2, don't worry about updating yet, as the settings file contains all the default settings anyway.
Icons are now in the proper format, so this should be good to go.
Could I get more feedback on this, please?
I haven't been able to test this on a locked down computer yet, but it works fine with admin privileges. Will the launcher prompt for admin privileges if they are needed?
There is 1 thing you need to fix; RevoUninstaller.ini needs the correct header. Right now it looks like this:
I'm pretty sure this is a bug with the PortableApps.com Launcher. I brought it up in that topic so hopefully it will get fixed.
Boo!
I had the correct header, but I copied over it by mistake with the one from the launcher template. I'll be able to fix it later today.
Alright, this is fixed now.
And as for your other question that I somehow neglected, yes, it will prompt you for admin privs if you do not currently have them.
EDIT: You know what, the readme says that it's mainly for the user's configuration. I'm going to revert this, but come out with DT 6 since I need to change the readme to mention that the Revo Uninstaller license is not GPL.
Why did you revert it? It doesn't do anything unless you put the file in the proper location. This is going to confuse people. If you're going to change one thing you might as well change all instances of it. You should change the launcher from RevoUninstallerPortable.exe to AppNamePortable.exe. I guess I don't understand how this makes it easier for the user. In order for the user to use the ini they have to rename it and change the header. There isn't any other app available on this site where you would have to do that. It makes more sense to have this app be just like ever other app released on this site, they should all work the same too.
Launchers will continue to be named with the real AppName, RevoUninstallerPortable.exe in this case. I think we should drop the INI examples entirely and just reference them in the readme explaining what they should look like. That way we won't need to maintain readme files or example INIs individually for each app anymore.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I don't understand why the PortableApps.com Launcher couldn't generate the file. It wouldn't be any additional work and it would make it easier for the end user. It seems like PortableApps is moving in a direction that is restricting the user and the way they use the programs. Functionality is being removed from the launchers (being able to change the name of the program being launched) and this seems like you're trying to make it harder for the user to customize the application even more.
I'm not trying to complain, I'm just expressing my point of view. I think it's great that all this is free and I hope you continue to improve the launchers rather than limit the way they work.
We *NEVER* include the INI in the root directory as it would make upgrades a nightmare. The INIs have always been in the Other\Source directory, but will sometimes wind up out of date (we add a feature or remove a feature from the launcher and forget to update the INI). All launchers are being replaced by the PA.c launcher which will have fewer INI options. It makes development, releases and support easier. And things like changing the paths to things are customization for the sake of customization (there's no real reason to). We'll probably add in the ability to change the app's name in the actual INI (for apps like Firefox especially).
Eliminating the sample INI and just having a standard readme is following the same thing. For advanced users to customize, you won't even need to read the readme, since launchers no longer require complete INIs. If you download AppName Portable and want to add a command line option and disable the splash, you just create a file called AppNamePortable.ini in the root of the app and have it read:
[AppNamePortable]
DisableSplashScreen=true
AdditionalParameters=-specialswitch
No muss, no fuss. No need to read a readme. No need to find the example INI and ensure it's up to date.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I don't see how the launcher is being limited. I think you're confused as to what that .ini file actually does.
What I mean by limited, the PA.com Launcher does not allow for the ini to change the path to the exe, the name of the exe, and the path to the Data folder.
This is just generally not a very good idea. Various things won't work with renamed executables (as they use their own name hardcoded, or don't work with changed name for security reasons). As for changing directory locations, we're trying to avoid this sort of flexibility more and more as it just complicates things (and particularly can break some sorts of applications which put their own paths in certain places).
Flexibility in application directories has caused some trouble with us over the years, and more recent applications don't support it at all (and I can't think of a single complaint about it).
If someone really wants to use a different executable they can modify App\AppInfo\Launcher\*.ini themselves.

“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” – Proverbs 15:1
Now that I've actually taken a look at it, that file is only an *example* for the user. That file is entirely maintained by the user, as an override to the default settings. As is, there's no point to moving it to the other location as those are the default settings anyway.
@John As far as the readme goes, you might want to either remove the part regarding license, or make a note for developers to change it according to the base app's license (as some apps don't use GPL, like Revo Uninstaller).
EDIT: Also, the Revo Uninstaller developers have allowed PortableApps.com to host this if and when it goes official (cited in original post).
The license refers to the launcher, not the app. As it always has. We do many non-GPL apps, but the launchers are always GPL. I think we should maybe clarify it by calling it launcher-license.txt and launcher-readme.txt
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
It says base app is GPL in the readme too.
@Devo
I don't understand why that would be necessary anyway.
EDIT: Oops, wrong comment link.
I'm not really concerned about the paths, it's being able to rename the app being launched. Some computers are so locked down that they don't allow you to launch firefox.exe This would make it impossible to launcher Firefox unless you rename the executable. The ini allows you to specify what executable the launcher should launch so you can still launch Firefox even if you name it to abc.exe.
Updated to Development Test 8.
not updated yet

Chris is correct, it was supposed to be a 7.
Updated to Revo Uninstaller 1.87.
Problem with launcher, keeps crashing every time it's started. I have Vista32HP.
When started, first I get nagged by the UAC then the B+W splash screen appears. Within about 2/3 secs a window then pops up saying PortableApps.com Launcher has stopped working - A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
It was working before I updated and it shouldn't be my laptop as I performed a full system recovery last week.
Good luck sorting it!

That'll be my fault with the PortableApps.com Launcher in some way (or NSIS's). The problem is, I've been unable to reproduce this sort of bug. I don't have the right OS. If you could make a debug build of the launcher that could be useful in helping me to track it down.

The launcher for this worked for me though as I recall, so I'm curious. My test build for OpenTTD Portable seems to crash only in Windows 7 and this seems to be a problem only in Vista (I'll test them both on one of the Vista computers at work to make sure though).
EDIT: Plus, I was almost certain it was a bug with DefaultData. Might be a separate bug then, or this bug causes DefaultData not to work correctly.
EDIT 2: Nevermind, that won't work. I'd need admin, d'oh.
Updated to Revo Uninstaller Portable 1.88.
on WinXPSP3 Admin. Nothing left behind as far as regshot told me. Didn't test a secondary launch though.

The secondary launch thing was a bug in the launcher before beta 4, I just haven't gotten around to updating this until now.
Updated to v1.88 dev test 1 but still same problem for me.

That's because the bug wasn't fixed in the launcher yet when I updated this. We're still working on one last kink, and then I'll do another DT of this.

@JohnTHaller Files left in TEMP from application uninstallers aren't cleaned up by PAL (because they run as separate processes so the TEMP var is unchanged).
Considering this app (purposely) affects the filesystem, is this acceptable behavior?
what happens on a local PC when you run revo uninstaller and uninstall stuff. the portable version should mimic it, with adjustments for better portability and better defaults in the case of a standard portable user.
