I figured I'd drop another status update in as it has been a few days. The power problems continue throughout my area of New York City. I started getting mostly usable power yesterday. About 100 volts with occasional dips. Enough so I can run off my UPS with a voltage regulator and get a solid 120 to my PC. But not enough to use my desktop and AC at the same time. It's been 5 days and it's now hitting the front page of CNN and The NY Times. ConEd is estimating 25,000 "customers" in my area. Of course, my 16-unit apartment building is considered a single customer... so estimates are at least 100,000 people affected.
The next releases of Portable Firefox and Portable Thunderbird are now being held until the release of Firefox 1.5.0.5 and Thunderbird 1.5.0.5 on Tuesday (July 25) and Thursday (July 27) respectively. It looks like a name change may be in order to fully comply with Mozilla's updated guidelines, but, the good thing at that point is that we will be 100% compliant at that point and not have to worry about further issues cropping up. I'll keep you all in the loop.
I was planning on getting a few betas of the next releases out the door today, but it looks like that may not happen. While moving some of my equipment, I smashed a finger by dropping a 25lb UPS on it. Not too bad, but enough to make even typing this painful. It should be ok in a couple days.
That's it for now. Just wanted to keep everybody in the loop. Oh, and yes, I did lose power again once just while typing this up. Luckily, my UPS kept things running.
Regards,
John
Get better soon! (your finger)
And can you tell us what the name might change into?
Are you sure this will all be over by the 25?
Will there have to be a logo change with this name change?
Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

Freakin' Mozilla and their stupid trademark policies. It's free software for crying out loud! I don't know; it seems to me that ever since they become incorporated, all they're worried about now is market share and other corporate interests. Believe me, if there were a better open-source browser, I'd use it. Unfortunately, Firefox is the best one currently available.
Well, it's good that the name change will prevent further problems of this type, so I won't have to complain about it anymore. What do you plan to call it?

Is Mozilla willing to work with you?
Vintage!
Apparently not if he has to change the name. But he's right; if he changes the name and artwork, Mozilla will no longer be able to touch him.

when you run the program, is it still going to have the Firefox branding or is it going to look like their alphas when there isn't any branding?
It will continue to be the official binaries and have all the Firefox branding. The name adjustments are so that we can continue to do this.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
What a dumb way for Mozilla to go about it. They let you use all the Firefox branding but force you to change the name. That, to me, sounds like it would be more damaging to their trademark (the thing they're trying to protect!) than leaving the name as it is. Now I know for sure that they don't know what the hell they're doing.

So... is there going to be a PortableApps.com contest for naming?
Let's just call them PortableRedPanda (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Panda#In_culture) and PortableWakinyan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderbird_%28mythology%29)
John, having suffered through similar circumstances ALWAYS choose AC over PC... and take care of that finger...

PORTABLEREDPANDA!!!
Wow, I'd really like that, it's cute too.
Portafoxie. It's got a ring to it.
Vintage!
I like just plain ol' Red Panda. Since the name is different, there's no reason to call it "Portable Red Panda"--Red Panda could become associated with portability on its name alone, similar to how "TorPark" is Portable Tor + Portable Deer Park, and doesn't have to be called "Portable TorPark".

Hmm..I like that too.
True enough... In fact I prefer just Red Panda as well, however I felt that the "Portable" prefix has become fairly heavily associated with PortableApps.com and would maintain that association for John.
Now the question is, if it were to be Red Panda, could the logo be altered to show a more red panda like head and tail?

What if he only distributes his creations and a text file explaining how to structure the files from an install of regular Fx?
Vintage!
It'd be a bit annoying that you actually have to download and install a version of Firefox then copy the files.
I heard about the power problems and knew you were around New York. It must be pretty bizzare to have blackouts in a city as dependant on electricity as New York is. About four years ago, the huge two-day long blackout made us all tell ghost stories and stay in tents. Hope everything goes well down there!
