I'm using thunderbird 2.0.0.19 portable on my windows xp sp3. In order to archive I've copied my mail-file from 2008. I've changed the name of the copy into "2009" and cleaned up 90% of the old mails. Now I use the "2009"-file for the next year. If I have to check an old mail, i open the old "2008"-file. First it works - like in 2007, too. But after 4 hours (and compressing all sub-files) i can only read my mails from 2008 created until september. The mails from autumn > new year are invisible.
In that time i've created a list of mail-adresses. This list is also gone. Is it perhaps connected with my problem? What did i've done wrong? How can I reconstruct my mails? What is in the gpg-file?

I'd suspect that the messages are there, but there is something wrong with the index.
In the latest version of Thunderbird, the index files have an .msf extension. They are rebuilt if they don't exist. One of the troubleshooting steps on the Mozilla sites is to delete the .msf file and let Thunderbird recreate it, hopefully that will solve your problem.
Let me know if you need help finding the files - but is sounds like you are ahead of that already.
Please, please, please..... make copies of everything first for a backup before you do anything that could potentially lose data.

Hi Jim, thanks a lot for your immediate response! According to your advice i've deleted all .msf-files (didn't know that there are so many - i organised my mail in 10 subfolder for inbox and seven for sent). But unfortunately the problem is persisting.
I've read some issues in the forum and thought: Perhaps executing TB in my new "2009" - folder changed somethings in the registry - although it is a portable app. Because the problem occured after executing the "2009"-TB. So I've copied my "2008" file on my private computer, where I use another TBportable for my private mail-account. But still the same: My TB with "2008" shows my mails only up to september, and the address book has lost one list.
I used the €-letter/sign for naming one subfolder. Deleting this subfolder (in my copy) didn't change the situation. Executing REGEDIT couldn't give me a hint... No idea so far. Unfortunately I' ve got no copy of my WIN XP system - I only backed up my data.
Now I will go to bed - we will see...

I think the next step that I would try is to make a new installation of Thunderbird (use a different directory) and gradually add the message stores to it. Try it one at a time to see if that helps. Maybe there's something going on that you just have to isolate.
