When they use a font that you don't have on your system. This happens most often with Mac users. It will appear much smaller to you than to them. Gaim itself doesn't do as good a job compensating.

Is there a Fix for this Problem? Can i possibly copy the font file to the directory of gaim and set it to look in that directory for the font?
If is, What is the name of the font it uses?
If your friend has a Mac and uses SuperHappyFont, for example, and your whole Windows system doesn't have said font, it will approximate with something else. This approximation will often end up small. Your friend's font choice will affect all Windows users to varying degrees, whether they use Trillian, Gaim, Miranda or the official client.
To get around it, you can head into Tools - Preferences. And in the Prefs windows, Interface - Conversations - Message Text. Set Gaim to ignore font sizes, font faces or both.

I set gaim to ignore font sizes, but I found the default font size was too small for me too. I poked around, assuming it was a GTK related problem, and it turns out it was.
Head over to PortableGaim\gtk\etc\gtk-2.0, open gtkrc with any text editor. Change "Sans 8" to "Sans 10" or "Sans 12", then restart GAIM.
Set it to ignore font sizes in preferences like John said, and you're done!
(Note: This will also change the default for every part of GAIM, such as your buddy list and other stuff. I suppose you could also change the font face if you wanted to, as well.)
