ok

The crucial entries are these:

HKU\S-1-5-21-1078081533-789336058-682003330-1003\Software\eebit
HKU\S-1-5-21-1078081533-789336058-682003330-1003\Software\eebit\FreePcb
HKU\S-1-5-21-1078081533-789336058-682003330-1003\Software\eebit\FreePcb\Recent File List
HKU\S-1-5-21-1078081533-789336058-682003330-1003\Software\eebit\FreePcb\Settings

which are equal to

HKCU\Software\eebit
HKCU\Software\eebit\FreePcb
HKCU\Software\eebit\FreePcb\Recent File List
HKCU\Software\eebit\FreePcb\Settings

The difference is that the ones with the long number are specifically for horusofoz' pc and the ones with HKCU are general. So use HKCU in the launcher.

Thanks

I thought I told the launcher to clear everything under '.../eebit/'.

Is there anything to do with the file entries and the *.logs under windows/system?
I did not see anything about that in the other launchers, but I might have just glanced over them.

I realize that not everyone will be familiar with the app. It has taken me several weeks to find all its little gems. And even it that short time I have had a need to be mobile with my layout and custom parts files.

Thanks for testing it!.

No, you can't do anything

No, you can't do anything about those logs.

Reg problems.

Ok, guys.
Feel free to post a link, but I haven't found the answers to these questions so far.

Using the Template: i.e. the file.

1. What is the format of the Registry entries?
Do I need [ ] around the entries?
Do I need to list any specific entries if I want to remove the entire key tree???

2. Which 'Data' folder is this file supposed to go in? Not that it matters because nsis doesn't package the file in the kit anyway. see next.

3. How the heck is this file supposed to get into the kit?
Do I have to learn a thousand things about nsis to get this setup right?
BTW if nsis creates packages and installs why the heck do I have to copy files by hand allover creation for the Template??? Use the tool.

4. This process needs better docs, and tools if you want more people to help out. I really want to help, but I've spent about 40 hours of effort to package 1 app with 1 registry entry. Learning curve sure, but this seems excessive.
I could do the same stuff using Tcl packaging in 15 minutes.

Thanks in advance,
Joe

Resurrected

Hi all,
I figured out the registry issues with the template, and NSIS and I got it working.

I posted it to my wikipages.

Please test and advise. Simple test is to check for registry entry in
HKCU/Software/eebit

Thanks,
Joe

Hi Joe Again I don't know

Hi Joe

Again I don't know anything really about this sort of app but considering its a really specialist product it might be worth posting about on various electronics forums or even emailing some electricians with info on it. Emphasising the free part Smile For this tact I would suggest going with the smaller guys as they have more incentive to save money on things such as software.

Good Luck Smile

Precisely

Sure I know what you are saying, I am one of those small biz types. A real garage operation that does not have monies (i.e. $1500) for Eagle. So yes, I am a prime user in the target audience.

I have posted on the FreePCB site and forum, and pointed those folks here. Some were very surprised to see the many other free, open portable programs. But they don't know about registry and such.

I did this to solve what I thought is a common problem with small software development: being able to take software to another site, and be able to use it, show it, talk about it without having to install a bunch of stuff. And my partner is one of those guys who constantly has computer problems....ugh.

I have a few other apps in mind to make portable also...

Thanks,
Joe

This may not be practical but

This may not be practical but how does the possibility of taking a usb around directly to some of the other guys/gals who work on a similar scale to you? I know this isn't the usual style in which apps are distributed but again considering the specialisation it may be worth it. FreePCB may never rival OpenOffice for popularity but you could ensure your FreePCB Portable has a solid position in its niche Smile

Feedback

Hi, I'm also developing an app which isn't very popular (FreeMat Portable), so feedback is very rare. Therefore I decided to help you improving FreePCB Portable, even if I wouldn't use it often (or ever ;-)).

Small PAF-Stuff:

  • FreePCBPortable.nsi: hmmm, I've never used the Portable application template, but it seems to work Smile
  • help.html is missing: copy a help.html and the folder Other\Help from an other app and adjust it
  • appicon.ico: some icons are missing
  • Remove the folders "\Other\Source\App" and "\Other\Source\Data". I think they are unnecessary
  • Remove the files "FreePCBPortable.exe", "PortableApps.comInstaller.nsi.0.10.1", "PortableApps.comInstallerConfig.nsh.0.10.1", "appinfo.ini" from the Other\Source folder.
  • Remove the folders "\App\FreePCB\src", "\App\FreePCB\AppInfo" and "\App\FreePCB\DefaultData". Oh, found out that the launcher creates the last two folders

Other points:

  • Great, no registry keys were left behind Smile
  • The file $TEMP\nst13.tmp\newadvsplash.dll is left behind. Well, I can't say where the issue is in FreePCBPortable.nsi.
  • If I start a new project and then want to change the Library folder, I'll get an error message.
  • New projects were saved in App\FreePCB\projects\... by default. It would be better to change this to \Data\projects, because it's easier to backup.
  • There is a default.cfg in \App\FreePCB\bin. I suggest to move that file to the DefaultData folder. At first launch, the launcher should copy this into the Data folder, then move it to the programdirectory and then back to the Data folder. But I can't say how to change the Portable application template to achieve that.
  • The launcher creates some files in the root directory: ReadMe.txt, FreePCBPortable.jpg, FreePCBPortable.ico, FreePCBPortable.nsi, appinfo.ini

Hope that helps!

Good points.

Thanks, I will begin to address these issues.
There is a new version of the app too! 1.354 so I have to add that.

RE: # New projects were saved in App\FreePCB\projects\... by default. It would be better to change this to \Data\projects, because it's easier to backup.

I'll see if this is configurable in freepcb. This is initially what the app wants to do.

At first launch, the launcher should copy this into the Data folder, then move it to the programdirectory and then back to the Data folder. But I can't say how to change the Portable application template to achieve that.

I'll see if this works, but I don't see why to do it. Is this for updating the app as alter revs come out?

Thanks again.

That's configurable in freepcb. The default path is stored in the mentioned default.cfg. Change the default.cfg like this parent_folder: "..\..\..\Data\projects\"
Hint: The launcher should check if the folder \Data\projects exists and if not, it should create the folder. Otherwise an error will occur.

Why to do it, hmmm, all PortableApps.com releases do it that way. \Data includes all custom settings, files, ... .I can't say all pros and cons of the PortableApps.com Format, but saving all custom files in the Data folder makes it very easy to backup and to update.
Maybe other experienced or official developers/users could explain the advantages and disadvantages more detailed.

Help with these 2

Hi All,

I think I have addressed all the issues except these:

# The file $TEMP\nst13.tmp\newadvsplash.dll is left behind. Well, I can't say where the issue is in FreePCBPortable.nsi.

# If I start a new project and then want to change the Library folder, I'll get an error message.

I don't see a newadvsplash.dll on my XP. Anyone else confirm this?

I get a error msg on several File Open dialogs...they complain about UNC mapped file folders from the network. Anyone know how to fix that in NSIS?

Thanks everyone.

Has the local version the same issues? Maybe that isn't a portable problem and should be reported to the original FreePCB devs.

Local?

Ok, testing this, results:

WInXP Pro in a corp IT environment.(they muck about installing junk and mapping drives)
Local application: Works fine
Portable App using Template Launcher: gives location unavailable warnings.

Have not found obviousness that NSIS is interpreting the filespace or not.
Maybe a permissions/acl thing?

Now I remember why I hate Windows.

Template Launcher

Ok, seems that the Template Launcher causes most of your problems. Sorry, but I can't give further assistance with that. I have never used this template and when I see the issues I will never use it.

FreePCB on SF again.

Luckily SF.net hates to delete stuff.

So FreePCB Portable is on SF.net now.

Better Link

http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?group_id=240665&use_mirro...

This should link directly to the download instead of the roundabout one in the OP.

Also If this works out it'll be one of my greatest tools. I may even be able to make that surround sound system I've been planning.

Bugs and general PCB comments

General:
This program does not seem to be quite as user friendly as some that I have used, but it did still do pretty much what I wanted it to. I have used PCBArtist and liked the interface, so I would say that this program in and of itself could use a little bit of a hand, but I am glad to see a portable PCB program.

Bugs?:
I noticed that when I tried the autoroute feature, it could not seem to find the file needed. I got the following error:

Windows cannot find '(userspecificinfo)\FreePCBPortable\App\FreePCB\bin\freeroute.jnlp'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

Also, when I started this program, it told me I had to run it as administrator. Can that be changed? Shouldn't it be?

Hi, I am still tracking bugs

Hi,
I am still tracking bugs in the launcher. Not sure on the admin, its not for the reg, but could be for some other access, or dll required. Any experts here provide pointers about tracking 'admin' requirements?

I have not used freeroute yet, opted to learn routing by hand.
Reading the files indicated to me that freeroute goes out to a website for the actual work.

The beauty of FreePCB is that you can help out. Send your comments to freepcb website. I found the program to work very well, despite bugs. And the very first gerbers I sent out to fab passed inspection and worked well.

Thanks,
Joe

bugs

I was just letting you know of errors that I had found, I don't believe I'll be able to help fix them. I used manual routing as well and it worked fine, but I was just thinking that if there was an autoroute feature, it should work as well if it is included in the app. The problem though was not going out on the web, I had access all day yesterday; the problem was when it tried to run a program to get on the web. It did not seem to be able to find the program that it was trying to launch.

files left behind

I found 4 files left behind by PCB on the root of my C:\ drive. FreePCBPortable.ico, FreePCBPortable.jpg, FreePCBPortable.nci, and Readme.txt (I assume the readme was from PCB).

edit: oops, and appinfo.ini

Found reason for admin requirement...maybe?

I might know why it had to be run as admin. The program currently tries to write those 4 files to the root of the drive, which in my case happens to be the C:/ drive. The problem is I only have write access to a few folders on the C:, so to place the files on the root, it had to be admin. Does this make sense? I am not sure it works quite this way, but it sounds good to me ;). If you fix this in the next release like you said you were planning on, it probably won't need admin privileges.

Error

I started the program at my colleges library and it said "You are not allowed to write to the registry!! Write access is necessary for this application! Program will be terminated." This could explain the admin problem. If the program truly is portable then obviously it doesn't write to the registry so it could be something in the original program itself.

Error

Sorry, 9 out of 10 apps here writes to the registry. They simply backup/restore the reg items so that the 'portable app' doesn't interfere. There is likely a problem between admin rights, user rights, and networked folders. Relaxing the admin required flag will cause a problem with networked folders...

These things are a huge time suck. Unfortunately I have paying work to attend to.
But the scripts are included for anyone who wants to help.

I think a better system would be to interleave a 'pseudo-registry' layer between the apps and the system at the user level.

Thanks

I see, I was under the presumption that they already used pseudo registry's but if they don't then I suppose that explains quite a bit. Unfortunately I don't the time (or other resources for that matter) to invest in even learning the language much less trying to code an app of this complexity. Thanks for the work you've done though, I can imagine it would take a while to code. (I've learned P basic, a bit of batch programming and plan to take a java class next Fall)
