Private Browsing by PortableApps.com 1.0 Pre-Release 1

Private Browsing by PortableApps.com has been released. Download it here.

Application: Private Browsing by PortableApps.com
Category: Internet
Description: Private Browsing by PortableApps.com is an add-on that works with Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition. It allows you to launch Firefox with an independent profile from your normal Firefox Portable profile. This profile has persistent cookies, history, download history and other privacy features off. Flashblock is also included to block Flash Cookies and other nasties. A custom theme and branding is included so you can easily distringuish your private profile from your normal one. It works similarly to the upcoming private browsing features in Firefox 3.1 as well as similar features in Safari and Google Chrome.

Private Browsing 1.0 Pre-Release 1 [0.8MB download / 1MB installed (+50MB if you leave anti-phishing on)]
(MD5: 53007b762272410f644c3d9bee088971)

PRIVACY NOTE: As with any network software, your network traffic is still viewable by network admins. This just lets you avoid having local tracks on the PC or on your portable device.

TESTER NOTE: Users of the previously released private alpha test version should delete their existing copy before installing this pre-release.

Release Notes:

1.0 Pre-Release 1 (2009-01-23): Initial public release

Nice, but of course you know

Nice, but of course you know once Firefox 3.1 comes out it has a built-in Private Browsing and will render this a bit redundant... I shall take it for a spin anyway. Smile

A While

3.1 won't be out til March at the earliest. And this is similar to the way I'm gonna add in second profile support. From the early 3.1 tests, I'm not sure if I like the way private browsing is implemented at the moment, so we'll see.

heh. i tested it out and i got a call from the IT security. It seems they didn't quite like how it worked and raised some flags. I think it was the program itself and not any problem with the portablisation.

Thanks JTH for allowing me to test it.

User Agent

Did they have any problems with Firefox Portable before? Can you check your user agent here: http://www.useragent.org/

I think there may be some residue from the .NET thing in it. It seems .NET now auto-infects Firefox with a .NET launcher so you can launch .NET apps online (oh yeah, THAT will be secure).

Sounds like someone somewhere

Sounds like someone somewhere needs to code up a Firefox .NET flusher. Sad

Runtimes libraries that "infect" other programs that don't even use them are viruses in my book. Maybe it's time to call out MicroShaft like people had to do with Sony's rootkit until something changes.

Microsoft installs a Firefox

Microsoft installs a Firefox extension which adds support for ClickOnce... basically, .NET apps which are limited to a specific set of privileges. The user can choose which privileges a ClickOnce app will be allowed to use, and ClickOnce apps can be programed to require certain permissions (and fail to run if they can't get them), or act differently if they can't get the permissions (example, save settings online if you can't write to disk or registry).

The extension also adds the .NET framework versions installed on the computer to the User Agent, like IE does. MS probably wants to be able to track %s of web users who have the different frameworks installed.

I don't believe this would trigger a call from IT. But without knowing what they called you about it's impossible to say what it could be. Could be unrelated, even.

Are you thinking about posting that default theme in the Firefox addons central?

Some Questions

First off, I've been debating moving the anti-phishing database back and forth from the Firefox Portable profile to cut down on install size (no reason to have 2 50MB files).

Second, I'm debating including this in the Suite by default. It's small. And it's a handy feature for some folks. Though, some may be confused by it.

Thoughts?

I say

yes to both.

If moving the file doesnt slow down the process too much. Flash drives are big these days so if it comes down to "small but slow vs. large but faster", I'd go with large&fast.

Running the Browser

I tried it out, and I think it works well, although it's a bit slower than normal browsers when it comes to loading pages.

I know that the original

I know that the original Firefox 3 has private browsing but I can't find it in FirefoxPortable. Do I have to use this Private Browsing download to get it on Firefox Portable 3.0.8?

3.5

Mozilla decided that there were enough changes within the new release of FireFox that it will not be 3.1 it will be released as 3.5

it doesnt work for me

i have customised private browsing quite a lot......and when i ck=lick one of the many IP address finder links posted here, my address can be tracked. this means that private browsing isnt working fully, and i dont know which change i made caused this problem. like i said, i customised it with a lot of addons, etc. so will a reinstall fix the problem?....or can someone help me track it down?

Not The Point

This is private browsing like the feature InCognito in Chrome, Private Browsing in Firefox 3.5 and InPrivate mode in IE8. It is *NOT* anonymous browsing. It just keeps no records locally. And it says it quite clearly:

John T. Haller PRIVACY NOTE: As with any network software, your network traffic is still viewable by network admins. This just lets you avoid having local tracks on the PC or on your portable device.

This is one of the reasons we will probably scrap it as people won't read what it is and will complain that it's not doing something they think it is supposed to do.

Confusion

Probably because they were also confused and didn't bother to read what it was before testing and posting either.
