Audacity vs mp3DirectCut

Hi. I was just wondering whether Audacity is a lossless editor like mp3DirectCut, or does it decompress->edit->recompress?

Also, what are the other pros and cons of both of them?

Not 100% sure but...

Audacity must have the LAME Mp3 codec to save .mp3 files, so that tells me that it recompresses and isn't lossless.

I looked up Mp3DirectCut on Wiki and it says it's freeware and runs portably, so that's nice. If it's also FOSS, we (rather, they) can package it as a Portable App. I'm not too happy with Audacity here because it lacks a couple features of the latest version (they're using the latest stable version; I use the beta at home and prefer that) so I don't use it, but maybe I'll take this other app for a test drive. I like to be able to plug my USB stick in and make somebody a ringtone from their music, and either copy it to their phone via USB or, if they don't have Bluetooth, copy it to my phone via USB and Bluetooth it to 'em.
