Windows XP

I know that you can put Window on your flash drive but how do you do it? Does anyone have a zip file I could use. I have seen this discussed before but the search didn't show me anything.

Sorry Jimmy

But you won't see that happening here.

A) Its illegal.
B) Its highly illegal.
C) Its so illegal Microsoft could sue the pants off of John and consequently close this site down if we were to host a modified version of windows. Though there are many sites that do this they do not have the public profile and resulting accountability that PortableApps.com has.

Until a portable Ubuntu is developed, and this is a Long way off, your pretty much much have to stick with the OS of the machine your plugged into.

UBCD4Win

You can boot Ubuntu from a flash drive... and many other distros.
Check out http://www.pendrivelinux.com/

As far as XP, what about BartPE (UBCD4Win)? Not true XP, but it works.

You are correct. You can boot

You are correct. You can boot an OS from a USB. However, what if the admin has the USB disabled as a boot device? Same with CD.

I think what would be better would be to develop some sort of driver-less Ubuntu emulation similar to WINE for Linux execpt where you can temporarily run your own OS from the USB without changing anything on the host system.

As tech stands now I think it will be a long time before you can launch Ubuntu from within Windows. If I am wrong please let me know as I would really like to know how this can be achieved.

boot from usb hard drive

is still less supported by bios versions then generaly thought. Only very new computers are able of that. USB Stick with its normal partition is removable hard drive.
More computers can boot from usb floppy, thats why HP makes that nice tool to make fake floppy on the stick and number of other people produce that tool creating fake CD partition, which also more computers seem to support as boot media.

One has to try with some of the linux and see.

For windows, well don't expect there is some zip file for anyone just to try simply.

This you have to build yourself from real windows installation CD/DVD with the aid of BartPE(for XP) or Winbuilder (for XP or Vista) or so. All those will give you the tools, but they will never give you the finished system for legal reasons.

P.S. have you herd of Linux Mint. its a smaller cut down version of ubuntu, a fork progect. It may be better to run from a portable flash stick, depending on its sise.

Use MojoPac!

You can try MojoPac. It is a Virtualisation Layer for your USB Drive providing a 'Mojopac Desktop' You can install almost any software inside (i had no problems with MS Office 2007 ans PS CS2) an run it at nearly native speed (the promotion video shows some 3d accellerated game running from the usb drive) The software is free but requires registration.

just have a look at the promotion video:

Sadly, that need admin rights

Mojopac WebsiteLogin Access Privileges:

MojoPac requires the host PC be logged in with administrative privileges or have MojoPac Usher installed. MojoPac Usher is an application that can be installed on host computers to enable MojoPac to run with a limited mode host login.

So you need to be administrator, or the admin needs to have pre-installed mojopac for you on the machine.... doesn't often happen on public PCs
