Audacity: Recording from the Internet

I have a copy of Audacity installed on my pc. But it will not record from the Web. I think that this has something to do with the sound drivers that are installed on my pc.

My questions is: Is it likely that I would have more success using Audacity portable installed on a flashdrive or CD?

Thanks

Nope

Vista and later doesn't permit recording from the PC's mix. There are ways to hack it though (check Google) in some cases.

Are you sure?

Everything I've read says that they don't prevent it, they just disable it by default and hide it.

Drivers

It's also been reported that many of the Vista audio drivers don't support the waveout mix even if you unhide it. The XP drivers don't have the same issue.

Workaround, and send feedback

A simple workaround is to get an audio cable to connect your headphone output jack to your microphone input jack.

There's been rumors that the RIAA has pressured audio card makers to remove the WaveOut options from their drivers.
Some have, some haven't.
If your audio card doesn't support this function, you should contact the manufacturer and complain. Maybe they have a solution, maybe they have a patch, but if enough people ask for something, the manufacturer will provide it if they can.
They are running a business...
