Why is unzipping faster than zipping?

I have noticed that unzipping is faster than zipping... is it just me or that really is so and why? Is it because the zipped archive has instructions on how to uncompress/unarchive and when it creates the archive it does not have these instructions so it must create them?

Is this also true for other archiving/compressing standards?

Hmm

Why is it it's so much harder to get one of those really puffy sleeping bags into it's containing bag when getting it out is so much easier?

That's why. Blum

the compression takes up more processing time to take each bit and compress it using a process intensive alogorythem.

Some compressors use almost

Some compressors use almost the same routines for compression and decompression. Take a look at the chart linked by Bahamut and see PAQ, PPMD, DURILCA.
