I love Notepad++ with a passion, but I'm also a big GTK fan. Personally, I don't see much that betters it from Notepad++, and it doesn't seem to have document window splitting, which is the name is implying correctly, it a pretty handy feature.
If there's reasons it /really/ betters Notepad++, I'd love to hear, as it seems nice.
Nonetheless, good find.
Is it a better text editor or programmers' tool?
Because really, a text editor does not need very many features. Presumably just about any text editor can satisfy my needs. For years I used EditPad Lite, and then switched to Notepad++ because of PA.com hosting it. It took some doing, but I managed to get Notepad++'s more advanced features turned off so it works as "just a text editor", and it still has a couple shortcomings (notably, it requires me to type .txt after the filename; also a couple minor things not worth bringing up) but it's pretty good.
You really can't beat a good text editor. You can make one that runs faster or uses less memory/processor cycles, has a prettier logo, but once you get into writing text, they all should work about the same.
Now, if it's a better programmers' tool, those features are above my comprehension and I could care less. I'm happy that PA.com supports Notepad++ as I've learned that program now, but if they were to adopt this, well, I'd hope they wouldn't stop supporting Notepad++. Maybe they can offer both though, if this is better for other tasks (writing code)?
Requiring you to type .txt as the file extension isn't a short-coming. The program is intended for robust code editing in many many programming languages, so there's no set file extension and .txt certainly isn't a good default.
It kinda is, if you've got plain-text files selected as the file type.
Usually, I expect to have to type in the extension only if "Any files (*.*)" is selected as the file type. It having the file type selected for you (rather, it was the last one used) implies that it's going to provide it.
It's not that big a deal. I've gotten used to putting in .txt again.
But the option should be there for it to do that, and as I said, I only use it as a text editor, I don't do any programming. It's nice that it works for more advanced stuff, but all I use it for is simple typing.
try ATPad. Its sligthly out of date, but I will update if requested.

It's better because it supports most of the same features, can run on linux and it can use the generic fonts sans-serif, serif and monospace which provides it with the ability to diplay multiple language character types in the same text file (also can auto close tags, quotes and braces without plugins).
Edit: I don't find that split panes very useful (I just switch tabs all the time).
Edit: I just spotted that there is a plugin for splitting panes.

I like the looks of this editor. I can't download or try it right now, but the screenshots make it look like a awesome piece of software.
I guess it is kind of redundant for us to have Notepad++ and Geany and ATPad, but choices are good.
Does it support NSIS? This is awesome. Even if it doesn't support NSIS, I think I may give it a go.

I don't think it does spport it just yet in terms of syntax highlighting or code completion but probably will do in the future (after all it is open source).
I just hope that in the future it will have offical plugins to support WYSIWYG for common file formats such as html or at least plugins that auto load property list of tags
