Not looking for a reply, just manifesting an old desire. MAME's nice and likely portable (sure looks portable since I run it from a folder without installation). Ignore or delete the post if it's not appropriate.
It says on MAME site it's free and it's source code is free, and it can be distributed under certain circumstances. Hell if I know what that means, but the license is here:

MAME Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator
It was one of the first multi machine emulators out there and has been going strong. MAME itself is a command line application with no GUI built in. Using one of a myriad MAME front end applications such as MAME32 allows for a GUI based MAME experience. AFAIK MAME is portable to begin with with no need for a launcher or anything else like that. It has its own folder structure that I feel maybe incompatible with the PAF format. All configs are handled via INF files so no reg entries or anything. It is also updated about once every month or two so is quite frequently updated and is very active in development.

MAME is one of those multi emulators. there are nearly 10 different kinds of MAME out there and most are GPL'd.
Technicly VBA-m could be classified as MME (MultiMachine Emulator) because it allows Gameboy, Game Boy Color and Gameboy advance rom playback.
True... But VBA-m only does the ninty roms. MAME does every arcade almost to date. Some 7000 or so last I looked. These range from Sega to Atari to every arcade manufacturer out there. Now if there was a universal emulator that could do sega systems and ninty and arcade stuff then that would be kick ass! but as such, there is not.
MAME though is one app. Everything else that calls itself mame is nothing more than a front end that uses the MAME engine that mamedev.org puts out. When a new release of MAME comes out, it is always first out at mamedev.org and then it comes out shortly thereafter on the front end sites like mame32 and a few others like it.

Actualy there is one that does Nintendo and Sega and some Arcade.
i am more into Single System Emulators due to them being much more stable and mostly because some of the best emulators for the roms i own are Single System Emulators.
