How to disable Java?

Hi,

I tried to disable Java but every time when OpenOffice is started, "Use a Java runtime enviroment" checkbox is activated.

Thanks.

What is it you are trying to

What is it you are trying to do? I can think of many reasons to disable Java, like "it's slow and bloated" or "I don't trust the version installed on the host computer" -- what is yours?

OpenOffice.org doesn't use an external JRE/JVM except for certain specific plugins. So even if it is on, the JVM won't be loaded as such unless you try to run one of those Java Apps. The thing is, if you don't have an external JVM available, those apps won't work. It's not as if they use Java with that checkbox ticked, and something faster and less bloated if it is not.

On the other hand, I could see where you might be reporting this as a bug -- a configuration change you make which does not get saved and reused. If that is the case, change the title of this topic to include "bug report".

Beyond that, I'm not sure what can be accomplished by unchecking that box.

Hi, I've read somewhere that

Hi,

I've read somewhere that OO's startup could be improved by disabling Java, that's why I tried to disabled it. Not sure if that's a bug or not. I have the latest Java installed on my PC.

Thanks.

If that is true, what's the point of even having the option?

I have the same issue as the OP; the setting to disable Java is not persistent. Upon restart the box is ticked again.

I agree

I agree: if you're going to have a setting, it should be persistent, or there should be an explanation (e.g. it needs to be that way in the portable version because ...)

It's also the case that since the setting is not persistent, one can't test to see whether the program does in fact load faster with it disabled. Thus, for me at least, the OP's question can best be answered by asserting that this is a bug report (the checkbox setting for disabling Java does not persist) rather than a question of how to disable Java (the OP knows how to do it, it's just that the way that is provided does not work).

The correct setting appears to be stored in

PortableApps\OpenOfficePortable\Data\settings\user\config\javasettings_Windows_x86.xml

when the OOo exits, but the PortableApps launcher resets it before it starts the program. I suspect this has to do with the way the Portable version is able to use a JRE on the Portable Drive, instead of on the host computer.

I apologize if my original post seemed to be too skeptical or unhelpful.
