I own a Dell Inspiron Laptop designed for Windows ME (yeah its that old) but the harddrive is broken. I tried to run SLAX operating system by taking out the harddrive and inserting the flash drive and then turning on the computer... then i get the dreaded message:
Operating System Not Found
Its the same message i got when i first found out my harddrive broke. Does anyone have any idea how to make my laptop work, please... That, besides my windows 95 desktop which serves no purpose except to play solitare and hearts and pinball, is my only computer.
Does anyone have any ideas how to make it work with my flash drive or by any other means?
When trying to boot your Slax cd, try pressing F8 or F10, this will bring up bios, where you can change the setting to boot your system from the disk. I used this to allow for boot from usb device.
I tried that and nothing happend.
Did you install or copy the files over?
Use this tool, and try again.

I have unetbootin but i'm not sure how to use it... i don't want to make a mistake and screw up the library computer... If i make it work with slax... will it somehow configure the base computer (the library computer) to run that operating system permanently?
What files to i put on as "kernel" or "initrd"?
P.S. I installed the files onto my flash drive
if your computer is that old i sereously doubt it will be able to boot from a usb drive.

Download the preferred operating system. Select the linux version (Slax), then select the version. Tell it to install the flash drive. That should be all you need to do.
The puppy LiveCD has a utility to make a floppy that will redirect the computer to boot from a USB.

Ha Ha might sound mean but what i mean by it is, you are sad about loosing ME.
Use the puppy Linux and if the hard drive is totally gone than i recommend getting a Dell with XP on it.
Load the App and Play
In these tough economic times in the U.S. its been hard to save up the money to afford a decent computer. If you know of any place in Tucson, AZ, that sells a nice computer/laptop that runs Windows 2000 or newer (that means not ME), ubuntu, or Mac OSX and sells for under $200, i'd be glad to know. Thus that is why I'm asking for people's help. I'm not so much sad about losing ME but about the fact that I got it as a gift and have only used it for two months before it broke down.
there are plenty of places online that are selling affordable refurbished laptops at a reasonable deal. i found at buy.com a 289$ IBM ThinkPad T40. Geeks.com is also a place to look at as well as your local Fry's Electronics.
Fry's electronics did have a relationship to the grocery store. the guy who started the grocery store died and left the stores to his sons wheren they sold the grocery stores to KROGER and started an electronics store which is now a chain.
Did you get it to work? I'm interested to know if all went well.

i am curious as well.
Nope... The setup menu that opens after i press F8 on startup doesn't read it.
may you be forced to recover your term paper. The 40 page one. Single spaced.
He's trying to get slax running and he doesn't think he can get it to boot USB. If so, puppy linux has a utility that can make a USB disc that redirects the boot device to the USB.

The guy might have alot of files saved in that copy of Wins Me. You'd probably be upset if your XP/Vista system suddenly went up in smoke too. I've been there, trust me it's a killer.
