Firefox 3 portable supposedly has more disk writes than firefox 2 portable and is very slow. Have they fixed this yet or is firefox 2 portable still better with less disk writes?

Firefox 3.1 is getting some speedup in terms of fewer writes.
On most drives, performance is ok with a few of the above tweaks.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
