I am using Apple iTunes 8 and have noticed that it slows down the whole system when it is running, especially when ripping CD's, making my computer almost unusable. I am using AMD Sempron 1.79GHz with 512M RAM. It struggles when Firefox 3 is running slow with iTunes, but fast otherwise. Any suggestions or alternatives?
-EDIT: I bought some music through iTunes
Any suggestions or alternatives
Don't use iTunes. Use something like Songbird.
Really, this question is better asked in a Mac / iTunes forum.
In my experience, iTunes has always had RAM eating and crashing issues.
- I feel compelled to reply because the specs on my comp are almost the same as yours (Sempron/512MB), and I've experienced similar problems as well.
Lifehacker did a post on iTunes alternatives a while back. Maybe that will help. I've tried Floola (runs right off the iPod)and it worked OK, besides being a bit buggy. Also, +1 for Songbird, it's suprisingly similar to iTunes once you get the right add-ons, and it's lighter too.
Songbird and Yamipod both worked like a charm. Songbird is reasonably fast, too. The only problem is iTunes' DRM. I guess they won't go anywhere, I just won't use it very much.

awesome software.
!!
It is a pretty bad resource hogger... Even on macs it uses quite a bit of your computer's resources... There really is nothing you can do about it. :/

I have never had a slow problem with iTUNES, however, My itunse 8 is Pink and Purple which makes the screen hurt my eyes.
Load the App and Play
actually I have over 1gig of ram 2.0 ghz processor (dualcore) and it's slow as molasses running up hill during winter

I had never heard of molasses before so lmao before and again after wikiing it.
Oh and another vote for SongBird. With a 6000 song collection, all tagged, with album art and 20+ addons it does take a couple seconds to run with 2 gb ram and 2.? dual core but still its a great app.
Am scratching the days away on my wall waiting for Ryan to update to Pre-Release

But there’s no sense crying over every mistake,
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.
You have to put brackets "()" around iTunes otherwise it's actually misquoting him

that reminds me of the old Misquote game in the forum somewhere.

They updated iTunes today and it supposedly makes it faster... I haven't tried it on either my Mac or windows computer yet so.... We will see =_=

The songbird update promised the same idea, but they actually follow through with it
Lead, Follow, or get out of the way.
Actually I did notice that iTunes is faster with this release. It is nice cause now my brother can sync his iPod without iTunes freezing :/

I can't hear you over my awesome Rockbox iPod!
I have an iPod, but I'm not tied to iTunes or anything, mostly because I hacked my iPod... I don't like Apple, due to the fact that they are crazy proprietary, but their tech they make looks amazing.

I have a friend with an Ipod that has Ipod Linux installed

I installed iPodLinux, too. I don't sync my music using songbird (iTunes, or anything else for that matter). My iPod is basically a toy...A $200+ toy. ^_^
