well i have Autodesk Inventor 7 and it wont run on vista so i was wandering if there a open source alternative to it.
Any one got any ideas

Can you give a description of Autodesk, its features and functionality? I had a brief look and it loks like a CAD system. From what little (Tiny I mean) understanding of this software type I'm pretty sure there are tonnes of the stuff.

with it you can create 3d mechanical design software. kinda like blender but you can make gears and pips and mechanical type of stuf.

Blender! i know of several engineers using Blender now because in todays economy they cannot afford AutoDesk
Try Pro/Engineer from ptc. That is a nice program.
