App Issues with Compactor

Hello all, I'm hoping you (someone) can help me with a major catastrophe...

I DL'd the latest "App Compressor" in an attempt to save some space and perhaps fit more apps on my thumbdrive...un(dirtyword)fortunately, I comPLETEly neglected/forgot to BACK UP MY DATA (there, y'happy?!?) before I compressed, well, everything...now I can't seem to UNcompress things to a degree that will allow the apps to even WORK!!! (Point of order, they didn't work once I'd comressed them "correctly" either)

To make a long, internationally-copyrighted movie-of-the-week, short...I need to know, if I re-DL the apps, is there a way to import/access the data from, say, Firefox and Sunbird at least?!? HALP!!!

My thanks in advance...

If you reinstall the apps

If you reinstall the apps your data should still be OK.

Already done

Official apps are already done wherever possible (a few have issues which mean they don't get it done) but the launchers will break if you compress them.

Reinstalling the apps will fix this.

"Already Done"?!?

Well, Chris, I'm just not sure what you mean by they're "already done", but how, exactly, do I reinstall over-top of the apps on my Flash Drive? (I realize that sounds rather "newbish", but I have good reason to want to double-check before proceeding...and please don't make any "head injury" jokes, I've actually suffered from exactly that, not long ago...)

Thanks, again...

Just reinstall over the

Just reinstall over the existing app.

Already done = Apps are already compressed.

Reinstalling...

Thank you, John, I appreciate that. Further, I'm wondering/hoping-not: When I reinstall over-top of the old app, will the bookmarks, etc. be overwritten by the "default" bookmarks file?!?

Sorry for all the questions/underconfidence...

P.S. The only OTHER issue I'm running into is when I try to reinstall over-top, I'm getting the "error" message that I haven't enough space on the USB Key to install the files...they're already there, taking up the space...how can I get around this?!?

Delete Some

You have to delete some stuff. The installers take into account the existing space taken up by its app when they calculate the free space on the drive. You need to remove some stuff.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Bookmarks, Data, Settings, etc.

Thanks for the replies, gentlemen, I truly appreciate them... One last worry: you're sure that when I reinstall Firefox and Sunbird my settings, data, schedules, and bookmarks will be okay??? I've had some of these data sets for over a year now...in fact, some of them date back to before then...they're very important to me (I suppose I've learned my lesson with regards to backing up before venturing out on a new install/procedure I'm not familiar with, hmm???)

Regards,

The items you've mentioned

The items you've mentioned are handled in the Data folders of PortableApps. These are not touched by reinstalling. So basically your gear will be safe when you reinstall over the top.

Its that same system that makes updating thru PortableApps.com so painless as opposed to some of the other portable hacks out there (eg. ThinApp). With PortbaleApps the data, in your case bookmerks, schedules, etc, are handled in a separate folder to the base app.

If your really worried use the 1.5 platform's option to backup data only (Great feature John Smile ).

Hope this helps Smile

Sunbird Error

Well, it WAS looking good for a while there; FireFox Bookmarks, settings, etc. all loaded back in without incident... HOWEVER... I reinstalled Sunbird, ran it, and was faced with this:

0x80004005

[Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [mozIStorageConnection.executeSimpleSQL]" nsresult: "0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: file:///E:/PortableApps/SunbirdPortable/App/sunbird/components/calStorageCalendarModule.js -> file:///E:/PortableApps/SunbirdPortable/App/sunbird/js/calStorageCalendar.js :: addColumn :: line 898" data: no]

Any ideas, anyone?!? I'd REALLY like to get my schedule data back...it's imperative.

Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Okay...

Let's clear this up.

The applications are already compressed for you when you install them. There are some places in the PortableApps that can't be compressed. That's why they weren't in the first place. Which means that not everything is compressible.

You would have known this if you read the instructions.

As for making everything work again. Download whatever doesn't work anymore and just install it right over.

The PortableApps.com Installer is designed to preserv all your data when you update.
So the installer will think that you're making an update of your app and do everything necessary.

I think that your error with Sunbird is because you ran out of Space on your flash drive.

When you update, you have to make sure you have a least double the space of the app's folder left on your drive.

So...

For example, if the FirefoxPortable folder in "PortableApps" takes up like 50 MB then make sure you have 50 MB left on your drive as space.

Hope this helps.
