I have TBP 2.0.0.17. It seems that I only have 2 options when receiving attachments and that is to manually click toopen them or send them to a folder which I specify.
I'm used to Eudora for 12 years and it would automatically send the attachment to the folder I preset AND still allow me to open it at will.
Is there any way to do that with TBP 2.0.0.17

Have you tried right-clicking on the attachment?

I tried that Jim and once you first click on it and send it to the folder you can't open it. It will let you send it to the folder a dozen times but not open it ever. I realize the settings I have gives me the option of either opening it or sending it to the folder but apparently not both. I was really hoping someone would know a way to get around that.

What kind of attachment is this?
If you save the attachment to a folder on your drive, why can't you use the appropriate program to open it?

Any attachment that is emailed to me such as word, pdf, jpeg, tiff, etc. In my old Eudora I could specify that they automatically go to a certain folder and later I could also just click on the attachment and it would open in the appropriate program.
Actually, thanks to you and John I started thinking about it more and when I went to my settings Tools - Options - Attachments - There are two options
1. Ask me where to save every file. (initially I didn't even consider this one because I wanted them to go to a certain folder.)
2. Save all attachments in this folder.... and you browse to the folder you want them to go into AND you choose what programs for your various attachments to be "automatically saved or opened with"
The problem was it did not automatically save them to the files. You had to click on the attachment in the email and it would save it into the folder. But then it would not open the attachment for love, blood nor money.
After your questions and some others I decided to try the first setting and choose "Ask me where to save every file" AND presto, I could save to any folder I wanted with just a click and I could also click on it to open at any time. The only thing missing that I wanted was to save automatically but I don't mind a simple click to save so my problem is solved.

Yeah, sometimes even the wrong questions get the right results!
Are you sure that you want your email program automatically saving attachments to your hard drive? That strikes me as a potential security issue.
However, I just read some of the release notes on the newly available Thunderbird 3 Beta 2. There is evidently an "Activity Manager" being developed that may give you more of what you are looking for.

All's well that ends well. As I understand, a virus in an attachment is safe unless you open it and I never open attachments if I don't know who sent it and for some people I know I don't even open theirs. ha I would go to the folder periodically and delete those I no longer needed which I'll still have to do.

I'm pretty sure there's no option to do that. But there may be an extension that could. It would be possible at least.
I used to use Eudora, too, and it bugged me that it put attachments in a folder.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
