I can install the version but program does not start properly and hangs after a few seconds. I installed version 1 over 0.7.
Edit: After deinstallation, new installation works but it takes ages...
Due to the way Songbird works, I doubt there's a workaround for this.
"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate."
I noticed on my first run after install it was sluggish but on following runs it was quicker. That said Songbird is a slow starting app (about 10 secs on my pc). Worth the wait in my humble uber noob opinion
PortableApps.com Advocate
After restart - Songbird is much faster to start - good so. But at start I receive already this Error Message:
Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80520012 (NS_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND) [nsIXPCComponents_Utils.import]" nsresult: "0x80520012 (NS_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND)" location: "JS frame :: file:///F:/PortableApps/SongbirdPortable/App/songbird/components/nsBrowserGlue.js :: :: line 49" data: no]
Is this a problem of the portable version or one of the original?
Further more Songbird cannot load a lot of components. Examples given:
Failed to load XPCOM component: F:\PortableApps\SongbirdPortable\App\songbird\components\sbStorageFormatter.jsm
Failed to load XPCOM component: F:\PortableApps\SongbirdPortable\App\songbird\components\sbMediacoreBase.dll
Failed to load XPCOM component: F:\PortableApps\SongbirdPortable\Data\profile\extensions\mashTape@songbirdnest.com\components\mashTape.idl
Can you try downloading it again? You may have an old copy that I accidentally uploaded.
The current version contains the contents of my "C:\Program Files\Songbird" directory, so it should work. (The previous version was the result of a 7-Zip botched extraction)
"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate."
the file I downloaded this morning and I downloaded now have the same size (12.658.518 Bytes) - so I guess I have the correct one, or?
check the md5 sums using this. It will tell you if you have the proper file or not.
Too many lonely hearts in the real world
Too many bridges you can burn
Too many tables you can't turn
Don't wanna live my life in the real world
is the checksum given above correct? Every file I downloaded shows a different MD5 checksum...
checksum calculated by windmd5sum: ff913f59ded6ccd6fbc3186c9c148fa3
might this be a proxy problem?
MINE: ff913f59ded6ccd6fbc3186c9c148fa3
I'm guessing ryan forgot to update it. Anywho, Your checksum is correct yes.
Too many lonely hearts in the real world
Too many bridges you can burn
Too many tables you can't turn
Don't wanna live my life in the real world
Sorry about that. Fixed the MD5 sum, the SHA1 sum stays the same.
"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate."
It looks like the files are directed into the wrong path: Whereas Songbird searches for "F:\PortableApps\SongbirdPortable\App\songbird\" the correct path is "F:\PortableApps\SongbirdPortable\App\Songbird\"
Let's see what renaming the path does...Nothing. Error console reports the same errors and warning again....
In Windows paths are case insensitive. Those two paths are the same.
Signature automatically removed for being too awesome.
The files should be directed to a relative directory starting with a variable (like $APPDIR), not hard-coded to a drive letter and base directory name.
I know Ryan knows that, so I now need to check the source code to see what you're talking about.
MAZZTer: There is no static file commands to a drive letter. Erith relative patrhs or variables are used. I'm guessing you're comanting on some kinds of uppercase vs lowercase issues and as mentioned above, isn't an issue on Windows.
Ryan: you're missing the whole help.html file setup. Oops!
Cancer Survivors -- Remember the fight, celebrate the victory!
Help control the rugrat population -- have yourself spayed or neutered!
I believe kaum was mentioning it was looking for "songbird" rather than "Songbird", rather than the paths being hard-coded. As MAZZTer mentioned, filenames and paths are case insensitive on Windows, but I'll change it nonetheless.
I'm also aware I'm missing the help.html file, I do those last
"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate."
I've had a look and all of the above mentioned files exist in the package.
Also, the first JS error doesn't relate to /components/nsBrowserGlue.js, but rather the file it's trying to load on line 49, which is resource:///modules/distribution.js. I'll have to ask the developers where this file should exist.
"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate."
Thanks.
If someone were to hypothetically make a help.html for me, I'd be much appreciative.
"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate."
Well no problems with the launcher. I didn't like Songbird 0.7, but with 1.0 and your launcher I may changed my mind. (This version is still quite memory intensive!, despite that I will still keep 1by1 by my side)
I imported my audio files on my ext HDD to songbird library, its drive letter was E:.
And, I connected that ext hdd to another PC, then its drive was set As I:.
Portable Songbird successfully read Audio Library from ext. hdd with different letter.
But, No Album arts have shown with that.
I opened .db file with Hex Editor, and I found that there are both "file:///I:/....mp3" (Nice Job!!) and "file:///E:/...jpg"(This is why no album art appears).
Really appreciate your effort for songbird, Ryan!!
I hope this comment helps your WORK.
Hmm... it should work. The query is:
so it should update both. I wrote it, so it should work
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I have a feeling I just forgot to run it on one of the tables. Of course, that's not your fault, so you get all the credit

Hello and saddened for my bad English,
First of all Songbird is magnificent.
I have the same problem that zzaz_an.
I imported my audio files on my ext HDD to songbird library, its drive letter was E:.
And, I connected that ext hdd to another PC, then its drive was set As I:.
Portable Songbird successfully read Audio Library from ext. hdd with different letter.
But, No Album arts have shown with that.
How then I to repair it ?
Oh, I forgot the version which I have is :

Help me, thanks...
But I believe this is a base Songbird issue. The Album Art Manager addon dev is working with S team to incorporate the AlbumArt into base app though I recall reading on SB forums
PortableApps.com Advocate
Can you upload your .db files to somewhere so I can take a look please? I can't reproduce this myself.
"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate."
Today, I get "only" this error:
Error: GStreamer error: GStreamer encountered a general stream error. Additional information: qtdemux.c(1968): gst_qtdemux_loop (): /player/uridecodebin134/decodebin2134/qtdemux103:
streaming stopped, reason error
Could this the reason why Songbird is only playing a few of my songs?
It looks like GStreamer, the library that Songbird uses to play media, is choking on something in the media file. Either that, or it's a corrupt version of GStreamer.
"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate."
I haven't seen this in Windows. Sorry if this is of no use, but I thought that was only on Ubuntu. As to the best of my limited understanding, it is the codec support. If this is the case, I also noticed that firefox portable will not play flash content no matter how many times I try to install the plug in. Perhaps the problem in both cases is that these are to be installed on the system and cannot run externally (like I said, limited understanding). It might also be a problem (again, assuming that this is Ubuntu) with wine.
Sorry again if I was way off track.
The Songbird developers ported GStreamer to Windows.
+ Flash works just fine with me for Firefox portable.

Btw. compare that
Seems that you missed something!
whoa, songbird takes ages to start, any suggestions?

It is probably the speed of your usb drive so really there is nothing you can do....

The speed of launching is directly proportional to the size of the media library in it's database (more songs = slower startup) and no doubt the # of addons affects launching speed too.

i got quite a few songs...
iLike Mac's
Try removing all the songs from the media library and then add only one of the artists/albums (a folder with 100 songs or less for example) and then see if the launching speed improves. If it does, you know the main reason for the "slowness" is due to the size of your media library.

k thx

It appears that this is due to the amount of reads and writes to the drive, unfortunately. I'm going to chat to the Songbird guys about this and see if we can speed it up.

Until I bother to compile the Pre-Release up, the code's up at http://padp.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/SongbirdPortable/ for anyone to take a look at and compile as they will.
Should, ideally, have the pre-release up soonish.
"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate."
Does anyone know if there is a way for it to start playing as soon as it opens? I have Songbird set to open as soon as I launch my drive. I would like for it to then go ahead and start playing. Is there any way to make this possible?
It may or may not. Looks like it does, but it's broken ATM.

Hi Ryan
When roughly do you think you can attend to this? It's a great app and I'm really looking forward to being able to use an official one and remove the Songbird folder in the leaves in the AppData foolder.
Thanks again

I'm thinking he might be waiting for the 1.1.0 release?
Do you think you could pretty please get around to this. Not sure what your download counter shows but you can be sure once this is released and hits the official release list downloads will skyrocket!
PortableApps.com Advocate
1.1.1 is released!
Please do not inform the devs of this... They are automatically informed and will update it.
iLike Macs, iPwn, However you put it... Apple is better ^_^
"Claiming that your operating system is the best in the world because more people use it is like saying McDonalds makes the best food in the world..."
If you are so eager getting your hands on 1.1.1 just try Songbirds in-program update functionality.
Took forever but seems to flawlessly work.

I AM A DOUCHEBAG
**that's why I'm screeming**
Dude.. You've just broken one of the cardinal rules of PortbaleApps. You never use a base apps built in updater. As a result you've also broken your SongBird's portability. Basically if SongBird will still work for you on other machines from the USB your going to leave lil turds on all the pcs you use it on. And as said, thats "if" it works
I'm not sure how you can fix this but can one of the gurus please weigh in and better explain why not to do this and if possible how to fix his SongBird.
Sorry if I seem a lil gruff iamnotherethisisI... but you've made a mistake and I need to make sure others know not to repeat it. Good luck in repairing your SongBird and sorry for the crappy first response your getting here on the forums. If it's any consolation...

Hi all I cant get this to work in Linux Mint using wine (0.7 worked ok).
I will try reinstalling it again at work when I have windows to do so and let you know how it goes.
I like the app and my thanks goes to the team for all the work they put into this.
P.S.
Another thing is I think its a shame that songbird has put more emphasis on the web browser side of things and not on the media player itself. I see that it is slowly catching up. As we can see from all the posts above mine.

Having Trouble...
I can't My Music when its on my flashy.
but it can find My Music when PortableSongBird is on the desktop.
My Music is under C:\Documents and Settings\Garrett Rider\Desktop\My Documents\My Music.
Songbird Portable is designed to work with a music collection on your portable device. If you want something that works with your local collection of music, use local Songbird.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
oh...
lol.
I thought it could work like that.
this is a joke, John, or?
First, Songbird 0.7 Portable works fine with music on the harddrive
Second, Songbirg 1.0 Portable works with music on the harddrive - but not very well
Third, I would like to use Songbird instead of MediaPlayer but I don't want to have all the music on my usb-stick (e.g. capacity problems)
So, use the local one then. The point of portable software is to work portably on a portable device as you move between PCs. Thus, a music library program would expect your music to be on the same device. Otherwise, when you switch PCs, all that music isn't there. So, what's the point?
You can install Sonbird Portable locally, but it's really designed for your music to be on the same device.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
But the whole point of portable apps in my point of view is that I am not allowed to install programs on my business laptop - because of some stupid policies about not using openoffice, firefox...
If I would be allowed to install it locally I would do it...
I'd be willing to bet that same policy means you can't do things like copy your own music files onto said laptop either. You should probably check.
You can probably install Songbird Portable to your C drive in your profile directory or something and then it'll use the music store on the C drive. But my point about the portable one on your removable drive is still valid. It would be pretty silly to index music on a drive other than the one stored on it because as soon as you switch PCs, all that music is gone... at least from the perspective of the portable app itself.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Hi, I want this software (SB 1.1.1)
"Watch Folders" feature - is really great, so it will be the best portable music organizer. thanks for your work!
You can want this all you wish, but it will get done when the author gets to it. Sorry pal but that's how it works here
