Please insert a disk into Drive G:

Hi,

Yesterday, I tried to install PAP 1.5.2 on a folder on my 1 GB USB called Apps.
I think the installation was aborted with error that I don't remember.
After that I can't browse my USB and get message "Please insert a disk into drive G:".
I had many other files on it that are important to me.
I hope you have a solution for this problem.

Thanks,
X

main problem is the drive..

some experiments
-reboot, check for your drive
-try safely eject -> if that works just replug and your data might be there
-> if not unsafely unplug the drive and replug
-if that doesn´t show your drive´s partition -> search for photorec tool to recover your partition
- if that doesn´t work your data seem to be lost and I hope you´ve got a recent backup?
The platform data are about one MB. so I don´t think they stuff the drive

I had the same problems very often with a corrupt flash drive.. un- and replugging helped in most cases, sometimes I had to format and rebuild the folders..
one day the drive gave up..
So, whether the tips above help or not -> you should look for a new drive. In order not to overheat an impaired drive you could be the portable folder on your desktop and copy it over afterwards...

Thanks for the quick

Thanks for the quick answer.
I tried all and none worked.
It shows up in Explorer as removable disk. I tried to format it and get this message: There is no disk in drive G. Insert a disk, and then try again.
Any suggestion?

Can you

try it in another computer?

failing that, in a different USB port (ideally in a different block of ports, so rear instead of front etc.)

Definitely do not try to format it - that will just make data recovery more difficult.

But from what you describe, it sounds like either a hardware fail or a corruption of the partition table of the drive (which would also strongly suggest a hardware fail).

Every drive I have had go bad on me so far has been due to mechanical failure of the USB connector (about 4-5 drives so far).

Do you have any friends who use linux on their PCs? The tools available there would definitely be better able to diagnose what happened.

I had no problem with the USB before installation of PAP.

As for Linux

Download and burn a copy of Knoppix - you can run it from the CD, and then try to access the USB drive.

I'd suggest that if you CAN browse the drive on Knoppix, you copy the important files to a second USB drive or the hard drive as soon as possible.

foult is:

to 90% in the flash memory itself or the multiplexer part of the controller. While the controller itself still runs OK, it will pass infos about a drive being present , but no media in the drive will say it is not able to read or setup any kind of partition in its virtual file system.

I have two such sticks here, tried to check one of them for some 'usual' signals with our workshop scope, but on the flash chips itself nothing was 'moving' at all, thought the controller seemed still to have clock signals for itself and do some kind of work.
In both cases, the sticks were some freebee from our suppliers, so probably very, very cheap parts used here.

Knoppix
I downlaoded and tested with Knoppix but the USB was not recognize on it as Windows does. Do I have to do anything extra to find it or it means that the USB is damaged?

Nope.

It should automatically detect it. It may take a while. If you are using Knoppix 6.1, it may not automatically appear on the desktop, but it should appear as a drive in the Home folder which IS on the desktop (open it and you should see the drive on the left with the other drives)

It really shouldn't be hard to find. If you still can't find it, then there's something wrong with the drive or the port.

U3 ?

Just Checking,

Are you using a U3 smart drive ?

Did you happen to try to install our platform into:
G:\System\Apps ?
