settings not saved to portable drive

I love having portable firefox, but settings like "store history" and changes to the chrome (i.e. "do not show statusbar" and "do not show home button") are either not saved to my portable device or are ignored. Also, firefox thinks i have just installed addons whenever i open it on a new computer. That is not a big deal but it may help pointout the underlying problem here.

If you need more information about these issues I am more than happy to test things out or give greater detail.

So, how can i make firefox remember my changes?

Thanks
-Kyle

are you definitely using the launcher?

What path did you install it to, and are you definitely using the FirefoxPortable launcher, and not running the Firefox.exe in the App directory?

in such case

there must be something definitely strange on your machine. Some traces of installation of the portable one on the hard drive or so.
If ff is installed form the paf file to the stick, and run via the launcher, definitely settings are stored in the ff directory on the stick and will be also used.

This works even when a desktop version is on the machine, they will not share anything under normal operation.
Try for example to install some simple addon. Then close the portable ff and go see if it was installed on the stick under firefoxportable , data, profile , extensions.
If not , it will be found somewhere in appdata folder.

Wait...

Are you saying Firefox Addon's aren't saving settings or Firefox itself? As in does firefox display the welcome page when you use it on another machine?

Google Toolbar?

If you're using Google Toolbar, it's settings are not and have never been portable. This is due to the way it is coded and should be taken up with Google.

Double Check

Please double-check that you have Firefox Portable installed properly (preferably to X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable). Remove your FirefoxPortable.ini file from that directory just to ensure it isn't interfering. Ensure that you have not set the copy of Firefox within it as the default as this is not recommended or supported (if you do it, you're on your own). And be sure you are starting it by running FirefoxPortable.exe directly or via the PortableApps.com Platform.

No

It's usually one of those things that someone has done wrong. Often people set it as default (you should not) or have an INI file with odd options in it.

It's gotta be one of those few things. Or you've got a local copy already running and it's latching onto that.

Steps

Ok, here are the steps:

Download a fresh copy of Firefox Portable and install it to another location (like X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable2), run it without changing the location or using any custom INI options. Make changes. Close and reopen. Make sure they're saved. Move to another PC. Make sure it still works. If it does, then something is wrong with your current copy.

If it doesn't, then something is up with the PC. Open task manager and be sure Firefox isn't already running. You may need to be logged in as an admin to be sure no other users are running it.

If it works right, you need to figure out what is wrong with your install. First, be sure there is no FirefoxPortable.ini within X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable. Then, be sure that Firefox within FirefoxPortable is not set as your default browser. To do this, set IE as your default on that PC. Then run FirefoxPortable.exe. Does it work now? If not, it's an extension which is messing it up and you'll need to figure out which. You can delete them all if you want in X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Data\profile\extensions and start over. Or try disabling them all and re-enabling.

When you post back, please detail every step you took and what happened at every step. Just posting "it didn't work" doesn't help or confirm you took the proper steps.
