Error launching PTB

I am using PTB in my Kingston flash drive without any problems. My mainboard only has USB 1.0 ports, so I just installed a PCI USB 2.0 card.
When I try to launch PTB from this new ports I get this error message:
(sorry my Win XP is in spanish)

If I plug the drive in the old ports, i can launch PTB as usual.
I can use the drive+PTB in my work PC, a Dual Core pentium, so USB 2.0 is not an issue. Could it be the PCI USB Card?? I changed it for another one, with same results. (VIA Chip, 5 ports (1 internal))

Thanks for your help.-

"The application failed to initialize properly. Click OK to terminate the application." I only know because I've seen the error before. You seem to know English, so you could have just translated that yourself and made it easier on us. Wink

Visual Studio tells me 0xC0000006 is an "in page error"--whatever that is. Sounds like your Windows installation is borked.

I am now at work and I launched it as usual w/o any msg's.

Any other hint, anyone?

Could be a problem with the driver for your new USB ports. Did the new hub/USB card come with special drivers? If so, they could be buggy.

I did not install any drivers b/c win XP does not require them. MS IntelliMouse USB works fine when plugged to that port.

Today i installed PTB in another flash drive (Kingston dTI 512mb) and I get the same message when trying to launch from the PCI card's ports. No problem at all when using from the mainboard's USB ports.

thanks for your help.

Oh, okay--so the error appears when starting TBP. You'd misleaded me into believing said error appeared the minute you plugged the drive in and hence couldn't access anything on it.

It sounds like somewhere along the USB bus, the data read from your key is being corrupted. That's the only thing I can think of that would cause a program to crash during initialization (when you see an error message like that, that's exactly what happened--the program crashed before Windows could even get it off the ground) with an "in page error"--which is almost certainly memory-related and probably indicates that the OS is trying to executable invalid instructions. I'd suggest that your RAM is on its way out, but that wouldn't explain why the drive works fine in other ports.

Only thing I can think of is that the PCI card isn't seated properly and so is sending the wrong data down the bus. The mouse isn't effected because there's not much data to corrupt there. With a USB storage device that sends millions of bytes per second up and down the USB bus, there's plenty of room for data corruption.

I've had horrible luck with

I've had horrible luck with my (thankfully gone and forgotten) old HP with USB 2.0 cards. This sounds all too familiar. I tried three brands (but alas, 2 had the same chipset) and I returned all three. Some older mobos just don't like them I guess. I hope that is not your issue, but I've heard of other problems like mine.

Hmm.

I actually put a USB 2.0 PCI card in my old 1.2GHz Gateway, since the mainboard ports were only 1.1. My grandparents have that computer now, and the USB card still works fine. Only thing that's a pain is reaching around to the back of the computer--which is practically up against the wall--to plug in my iPod shuffle. Sometimes I'll get lazy, though, and just use the front USB 1.1 port. Smile

Thanks Bruce,
ill try the card in a different PCI slot.

If it doesnt work i'll just return it!
I was excited in getting a USB 2.0 card and buying a Kingston DTII with secure data to completely migrate to PTB and flash drives and forget the Outlook in every PC Cry

Thanks a lot for your help.

OK! The card is soo gone!
I put it in another PCI slot, but i still get the same error when launching PTB.

The card is gone and i'll stick with my old ports 'till i get a chance to renew the whole computer.

Thanks Bruce for your help!

No problem. Sorry I couldn't help enough to get it working, but it sounds like there's not much you can do. Sad
