Is it legal to make Eclipse portable (distributing Eclipse with a launcher)?

Link to the EPL (From Wikipedia): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eclipse_Public_License

Im a bit confused, I really wanna make Eclipse Portable (distributing Eclipse with a launcher), if it is illegal to distribute Eclipse with a launcher, I'll just make a launcher for it.

Done

Actually, it's already done. But it won't be released until the way Java works on the PortableApps.com Platform is finalized.

Really? I wanted that project! Also I don't think thats really

nescecary since all the comps (I have used quite a few) I have encountered had Java on them. But your the developer so its up to you. Also is the Eclipse in Eclipse portable up2date and comptable with slightly non-portable plugins such as Subclipse.

As all of ya should know Micro$oft is the Evil Empire, and Windows (a.k.a. Winblows or Windoze) is their greatest general, so please make a difference and install Linux or FreeBSD on yer Windows comp.

Well...

For Joe Average, he's probably not going to have Java installed, because usually programs the average user uses doesn't require Java. And public computers are also less likely to have Java.

Wow, I just noticed I still had a signature, that's enough of that.

Exactly

Same reason that I haven't released RSSOwl Portable with a splash yet.

OK, according to TheCounter.com for August, 93% of people have Java enabled, 1% disabled and 5% unknown. I couldn't get stats from NetApplications.com though.

There's a litte difference

There's a litte difference you might not considered:
Most users probably have the Java Runtime Environment installed, which is able to run Java programms compiled into Java bytecode. For development, you need the Jave Development Kit which has the needed compilers.
Even if most of the computers have JRE installed, it's senseless to use Eclipse with it, because you can't compile anything. Also, Java requieres a bunch of enviromental variables to run - I don't know if there's a way to get it working without changing them or creating new ones, which should be necessary on Joe Avarages computer Wink
Also, ever thought about the C/C++ Version of Eclipse? Would be great if there's a package of Eclipse combined with the GNU C/C++ Compilers. Technically I don't see to many problems, but I have no idea of the licensing thing.

Environment variables

Those are easy. Each process gets its own environment (with initial values inherited from the calling process), so the launcher can just add the needed variables itself and they'll only be seen by the launched app, without interfering with anything else.

The JRE itself is the bigger problem--and that's easy to solve at this point; you just have to put it in CommonFiles (via the Java Portabilizer), like how FrostWire Portable does it. Java is GPL now, so there should be no issues with us doing this. Of course, as always, it's up to John.

You do realize that you just replied to a year-and-half-old post though, right?

Maybe you should not use Joe

Maybe you should not use Joe Average. The Average PC user is a bit insulted that way. Your Joe Average is a user that is (very) new to computers.

Besides I agree that Java Apps cannot be considered 'Portable'.

But please, no more Joe Average like was used on the forums.

2 things

1. Did you realize that Patrick's comment was from September 2007?

2. I see nothing offensive about using Joe Average to refer to the average user. It's not like he's calling them Captain McSuperNoob or insulting their intelligence at all, just saying they are an average user.

Yeah I noticed it was an old

Yeah I noticed it was an old post after i posted Sad
Old resurrected posts confuse me like a Cap SuperNoob!

And the benchmark for Joe Average here seems to refer to a user that is using the PC for the first time...

Good stuff! I can't wait! Biggrin

ok, I'm confused...

I've searched through the forums and the most recent info I can find about a portable Eclipse is this note that it is ready but waiting for portablized java. I thought that was completed for OpenOffice? So, is there a way to get Eclipse with Java and MinGW/MSYS integrated with PortableApps?

The

Java implementation with the Platform isn't finalized yet...

portable Java is possible

portable Java is possible with OpenOffice.org Portable, but since we can't create our own distributable Java Portable yet (still includes a couple closed source components), we havent done much with java based apps.

Eclipse Portable Progress?

I was wondering what the progress was on making a distribution of Eclipse for PortableApps? Any progress on the Java platform?
