Security, Safety and Antivirus

I think PortableApps need more attention to develop more application for security, safety and antivirus.
Most of the time some people may point their finger towards us portable users.
Since they have opinion on how less protection portable users got in their portable devices.

Thank you.

ClamWin Doesn't Cut It

ClamWin, in my experience, doesn't do enough. ClamWin takes a great deal longer to do a full scan than other antiviruses, and it doesn't catch things that installed clients do catch. Plus, it seems useless against malware, grayware, spyware, etc.

EDIT: I would like to add, that if a terminal looks fishy, I don't bother using it and ask for my money back at whatever computer cafe I am at.

Limits are for people with no imagination.

at least clamwin doesn't have

at least clamwin doesn't have a hueristic scanner, I find with those kind of scanners it takes it longer than to scan than ClamWin.

I'm not sure but

Does ClamWin actually DELETE a virus it finds because a lot of the times i use the scanner to check other computers and they have viruses but no message pops up telling me if I want to delete the virus or the file infected with the virus. I do a new scan and the same viruses keep on popping up. Any idea why?

No

Nope, it doesn't. It just tells you where the virus is.

Use the search box! Please!

You must run the scan in

You must run the scan in Remove or Quarantine mode in the Tools-Preferences->General Tab

Use it with care as it could be a false positive Shock

Report Only is the default mode.
You can use it to tell you files you might want to manually delete.

FF + ABP+NoScript ..

What's the point in portable virus-scanners,
if you don't have admin-rights you are owned ..
Stop clicking on stupid e-mail attachments or warning-screens telling you to install this or that because it has been detected that you surf pr0n, .mp3-files are not supposed to have a .exe extension and no, that Nigerian guy doesn't have 250 million.
About your flash-drive : If it lives in promiscuous mode there's a good chance it will contract a computationally transmitted disease .
The only way to go when security is a crucial factor is read-only mode or
a bootable live-CD, you can not trust public computers .

PS : ClamWin is excellent, "real-time" protection is a waste of resources .
It doesn't claim to be a anti-spyware tool, but again : FF + ABP+NoScript;
What spyware ? I haven't had any since starting using that combo ..

Nice sense of humor. ClamWin

Nice sense of humor. ClamWin Portable is only really meant to scan indivigual files or selected files when the end user asks and to scan memory. i find this useful when i am at the university and their virus database and program is outdated by 3 years because of a program called deep freeze. this makes the system and my portable drives vulnerable. luckly i dont have to worry about a firewall because the school has a good one -_-

well..

it's been my experience that file scanning isn't very worthwhile -- scan the memory.

I assume "The Clam" is meant to detect pretty obvious, widespread viruses. Has anyone done a head-to-head with it and some other brand ones?

evry computer magazine

does publish once a year at least some testing.

My experience, the clam does not detect so much, but this is probably the feature and not the bug. Most of the antivirus software companies have probably given up any proper search and databases, they use big heuristics which will find a virus in almost everything and so they will show you how successful they are.

So the only way I can work during the day in my office is to switch any antivirus off and scan the computer then sometimes in the night. When every software we produce here in our company is malware as our antivirus is trying to tell us, then it needs to be switched off. My 10k usd construction software is malware, the driver for my usb microscope, the telnet session to remote linux machine may last for 10sec only, udp broadcast is malware etc , etc, in such case I rather prefer some simple tool like clam, make scan with it and have quiet tame during the day.
We tried number of top known antivirus products here, but it is becoming more and more useless.

Almost all my Emulators are considered Malware, All my hacking tools are considered malware and all the install programs for my pocketPC are considered dangerous via some of the bigger AV programs.
