Virtual Machine vs Internet Security

Hello I've been using these portable apps for a little while now and think they're great. I would like to see some form of malware protection and looked at Clamwin.

Though the reports don't look too good and I then thought about the constant updating possibly being a problem due to an ever expanding file size full of new definitions.

Is it not possible for something like Sandboxie, VElite or Safespace to replace the need for internet security software?

I don't think these are open source but I think that would make a good Portable App as I believe it eliminates the need for every other type of malware protection - any viruses, trojans or whatever and you just wipe it clean.

Though, I've not got round to trying these 3 virtual desktops yet, is it not a step forward for protection from malware?

Personally I use Sandboxie at

Personally I use Sandboxie at home to test new applications, but there is two problems that could possibly block it from being published as an official PortableApps.com application:
It is not open source (limited freeware license, or commercial license)
It requires the use of a system driver to redirect the I/O of an application

I'm not sure for the two others (VElite and Safespace), but if they have the same licence model and system driver use, I don't think it will be possible to see it on the PortableApps.com Platform anytime soon.

Who knows what can happen in the future? Maybe a commercial software developer might see a good opportunity to make a PortableApps.com version of his application and make it available to their current userbase as well as reaching a new userbase? (My thought would be that PortableApps.com users are generally more tech-savvy than the average user, but I could be wrong)

To launch or not to launch...

It may not be open source but neither is format factory, some genius figured out how to make it portable and posted a launcher somewhere on this site. It's an excellent program too!

As for the system driver, well, that's beyond my knowledge so I can't comment. But I'd like to ask if it requires a system driver (does the driver need to be installed to a windows folder? I suppose that'd be why it's called a system driver, right?) wouldn't this driver be on every windows version, say for example after xp?

So if sandboxie was made into a PA, when you load it up it would detect which windows version was being used and still be able to detect the driver?

Sorry, I know i'm probably showing my ignorance a bit here, i'm just curious to know more how these things work Smile

Just a short comment on your

Just a short comment on your choice of words. This is not a criticism, but intended to help make posts easier to understand.
- Virtual Desktop refers to having multiple sets of windows that you can switch between on one machine, like how linux/unix has pager.
- Virtual Machine refers to programs that run a 'computer within a computer' like Virtual Box, VMware, or the like.
- Sandboxes allow the isolation of a program within a simulated environment, but with less isolation than a Virtual Machine.
