I recently visited the Mozilla website and looked around the page on Mozilla-bazed applications. One of them is Spicebird (at http://spicebird.com ) which is described as " Spicebird is a collaboration client that provides integrated access to email, contacts, calendaring and instant messaging in a single application. It provides easy access to various web services while retaining all the advantages of a desktop application. The application is based on projects like Thunderbird, Lightning and Telepathy and adds more functionality and integration among its components."
The latest version is only version 0.7.1, but it seems to be distributed as open source, so it would be a potential candidate for portability. However, there seems to be very few add-ons available for it.
I wonder therefore if that would be the solution to the lack (or perceived lack) of e-mail, project-management and time-management software à la Outlook. If it is, it would be a wonderful addition to the list of available portable applications. However, if it is another piece of bloated software or something that is less than Thunderbird Portable + Lightning, then it would be a waste of time.
Comments anyone ?
If you try searching (https://portableapps.com/search/node/spicebird) you will see there are several posts related to the development of Spicebird. There are also two posts in which John has released test versions of Spicebird (0.4 and 0.7).
Thanks.
I have been cursed with websites where the "search" function doesn't work, so it's nice to see one where it works.
As for Spicebird itself, it works, but doesn't give much more than Thunderbird plus Lightning extension. The only added function I see is in Spicebird is that messages may be tagged (like in Thunderbird), and some of the tags may be designed to automatically create a task. There might be a few other details.
Of course, the interface differs slightly and its appreciation is subjective. During the process, I discovered that Lightning is able to manage public (group) calendars. How well, I don't know; at our office, people either use a paper agenda, their telephone or a Palm.

is something you have to take up with the developers. I know they have big plans for spicebird, but it's yet very young so many features are missing.
Spicebird is RSS, calender, and mail rolled into one. It is currently at 0.7.1. I like it myself.
Too many lonely hearts in the real world
Too many bridges you can burn
Too many tables you can't turn
Don't wanna live my life in the real world
I've posted on Spicebird's (spam-ridden) site a couple of times requessting infomation but no answer has been forthcoming. Has anyone had any indication from Synovel as to when they may be releasing a 1.0? John H seems to be quick to portablise any Beta but I love this app/concept and have been waiting ages for it's release.
Anyone have any news? One of the key features in their road-map seems to been integration with Drupal/CMSs but I'd rather they just got what's in the BETA releases stable enough to use everyday, if anyone hasn't tried it yet, I'd recommend it.
Peace + Out,
John
