MPlayer - Playing chinese files with chinese filenames.

I have one problem.

It seems that it can't even play any file (that i know works) if the filenames are in chinese characters example (哦指导- 大mouth.[whatever filetype] To play them i have to rename it again. Which is a tad too much of a hassle for me.

Any suggestions on this?

Here's the screenshot.

VLC

I'd recommend using VLC for now which is much better maintained on Windows. We're going to be dropping MPlayer since it looks like they'll never do a stable release again. We'll probably package SMPlayer instead and let them worry about which nightly build of MPlayer to include.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

SMPlayer will not play them either.

SMPlayer is improving all the time to the point where I am starting to use it more than my favourite which is KMPlayer. Unfortunately SMPlayer won't play files with chinese characters because it still uses MPlayer under the hood. Elsewhere on this site you will find some development versions of Mediaplayer Classic or Mediaplayer Home Cinema. They will play the files with chinese characters.

VLC or MPC HC

Why i choose Mplayer as my 2nd preferred player? (1st is K-lite pack)
because it is fast and easy. I Find VLC bloated.

So Can MPC HC plays all types of files preferably .rmvb and mkv?

Codecs

In my previous post I gave the link for MPC-HC.
I have taken this package and added codecs as shown below.

I had previously downloaded "windows essentials" codec pack for use with SMPlayer. I have set up 2 versions of MPC HC.
1. For playing rmvb, I copied the real player codecs to:
D:\portableapps\MPC-HC Real Movies Portable\App\MPC-HC
5/04/2007 2:11:44 a.m. A----- 27,136 cook.dll
10/12/2002 3:24:52 a.m. A----- 94,208 drv33260.dll
10/12/2002 3:27:24 a.m. A----- 100,864 drv43260.dll
29/11/2008 8:02:24 p.m. A----- 2,748,416 mplayerc.exe
5/04/2007 2:12:36 a.m. A----- 122,880 pncrt.dll

9/06/2002 7:34:38 p.m. A----- 27,648 tokr3260.dll
I then used appcompactor to reduce the installed package to 3.34 Mb.

2. For all other movies I copied the entire codec pack to the same relative location & made another portable package:

I'm not sure what you mean ? Which setting?

I used appcompactor to compress only the \app directory. Appcompactor was left at its default settings. Do not compress the portable program launcher otherwise it will not work.

I have done this to suit my own needs and the main file types that I use are rmvb, mpg, mov & mp4 so I hope this helps you. Basically the final setup will depend on what codecs that you need for your normal file types. In the past I would really hacked off when people would make claims that a particular program would play virtually every file type available, including rmvb - yeah right! - I wasted so much time downloading programs only to find that you still needed to download huge codec packs which gave very bloated installations.

Since you have all the stuff

Since you have all the stuff done.
Care to give me a copy of yours? I would like to evaluate it.
& i'm using K-lite codec pack (mega pack) .. SO im pretty lost. Sad

You will need to check with

You will need to check with one of the moderators here to see if it allowable to do that. However, I have used the K-Lite pack before & it also has the media player classic as part of it, so you should be able to play these files.

Yes - you can copy but only as shown below

I have listed out each step as shown below.
I hope that this makes it easier to understand.
Also, remember that this was done to suit my own requirements.
This will allow you to have a small portable installation that will play files named with chinese characters.

1. Download MPC_HC from here.
https://portableapps.com/node/15030

2. Install it.

Mine was installed onto my D: of my laptop.

Go to D:\portableapps\MPC-HCPortable\App\MPC-HC\
delete all the files except mplayerc.exe. This saves 11.95 Mb.
Note: the files deleted are language files. I don't need them for an english only installion. Another file is an icon library file which I believe allows you to change the program icon. The program seems to run ok without it.

If you want to save more space, then you can delete the
D:\portableapps\MPC-HCPortable\Other
D:\portableapps\MPC-HCPortable\help.html

3. Download a codec pack that will play the file types that you have.
I used the "win essentials" codec pack, but you can use any codec that will play the file types that you have. If your K-Lite pack has the same files as I have listed in my previous post then just copy them over as in step 4 below.

4. Extract the codecs & copy them into the following directory.

D:\portableapps\MPC-HCPortable\App\MPC-HC\

Note: the codecs are going to where mplayerc.exe is so that the program can find & use the codecs. You can do a search on the net for a program called "Universal Extractor" which allows you to extract files from programs without installing them. Try looking at http://www.portablefreeware.com/?sc=124&p=2 If you want a smaller installation, then you can use appcompactor (from this site) to shrink the files. However, only shrink the files & directories in \App & below. Do not shrink the launcher program (D:\portableapps\MPC-HCPortable\MPC-HCPortable.exe) otherwise the program will not start.

As I have shown in my previous post, I was able to get an installation of only 3.34 Mb that will play real movies (rm & rmvb). I also renamed my installation from D:\portableapps\MPC-HCPortable to D:\portableapps\MPC-HC Real Movies Portable to distinguish it from a standard install.
Remember that mplayerc.exe (the main program file of this installation) will play several different file types because it has some built in codecs, so all you have to do is add what it does not already have.

So All the codecs should be

So All the codecs should be in just one folder with mplayerc.exe rather than few folders of codecs right?
