Alternative for Kompozer?

Hi. Since Kompozer appears to be updated no more, I want to know if there is a good alternative for a portable opensource HTML editor. I have tested Amaya and I have mixed feelings for it, I also tested HTML-Kit 292 and found it a bit overkill for my current needs.

Don't get me wrong, so far I'm happy with Kompozer, but I'd like to get an option in case Kompozer is no longer useful due to new features in CSS, HTML or so on.

Kompozer is not dead

It's just slow. Check this out:
http://sourceforge.net/forum/message.php?msg_id=5122295
from the lead dev (Kaze), dated July 25th.
Yep, the last release was about a year ago, but if you compare the update frequency to some other apps, even ones here, it's not out of the ordinary.

If Kaze is right, we should see a new version soon (his estimate is September).

Personally, I'm eager to see new things soon, too!

KompoZer is not dead ... yet

September is over, October has come to its end. And Kompozer is coming to its end too. They decided to develop a Blue Griffon.

May the FOSS be with you!

Interesting.

You can actually DL an early version from the link you provided, but it's still really primitive - pre-alpha.
It looks promising, but expect to keep using Kompozer for quite a while before this one catches up.

I've used QuantaPlus on linux

I've used QuantaPlus on linux for years and like it, but I guess it's not portable

No good

My Dad and I tried Amaya, it is really a very depressing experience. It is horrible.

Feel free to try it though, don't let me put you off Wink

Can you elaborate?

What version of Amaya did you try? Also what were the drawbacks? Feature set? Messy code?

Feature set!

Feature set. It just didn't support anything much, and as far as usability went it was yuck. My foggy memory says it ignored style-sheets completely... it was useless for anything at all serious.

I've never even looked at its source code.

From memory, it was version 9. Now that it's at version 11.1 (and 11.2-pre3) it may be somewhat better; maybe I should try it again.

Tried it

I've now tried it, and while its features may have improved, it is absolutely lousy. It's really buggy, losing elements all over the place, not positioning them properly, and usability is atrocious. As far as a portable version goes, forget it. I'm getting files in a few locations: C:\amaya (probably impossible to redirect, and not able to be created and copied to for at least Vista without admin. Mostly this seems to be used for temporary data); also there are a few files in $EXEDIR\config\*.*, $EXEDIR\*.conf and a few other $EXEDIR\*.* files (where $EXEDIR is C:\Program Files\Amaya).

I don't have any intention in keeping on and bothering making an Amaya Portable package, partially because of the C:\amaya stuff, but mainly because the application itself is so buggy.

(I will admit there was one nice feature, all the predefined symbols, especially the electrical symbols, in its SVG section. The pity was that it was so unusable Sad )

Thumbs down to Amaya

and more evidence that Kompozer is not dead:

whereas Blue Griffon seems to be stuck:

Cheers

It's good to see Kompozer is still kicking. I really don't wanna fork out the $ for Dreamweaver CS4 especially considering the sizable markup here in Australia. Add to that CS5 will likely be out by the end of next year with another $$$$ price tag on it Sad

I think BlueGriffon is still in development it just doesn't have nearly as bigger awareness/user base/development support as Kompozer did/does so its a bit slower it getting done. I'm sure once a beta is out for public consumption it's development should speed up a bit as more devs come on board.

@Chris Morgan - I'll take your word for it Smile
