Miranda: Multiple instances

Apparantly, I can't run multiple instances of Miranda Portable.

This is strange, because I googled it, and I found someone had posted a "bug" on miranda dev and it was marked as solved because according to the developers, there isn't any check so that should work.

So I'm guessing the problem is with the MIM portable launcher...?

Also, what does MIM actually do that's not portable, warranting the use of a launcher?

PS: By searching the forums here I found out that Mozilla portable launchers support a setting "allow multiple instances" by placing an ini in the root (which, btw, screws up the "official" directory structure if I read that draft correctly, after all, that says there should only be 1 html and 1 exe, placing the ini there screws the backup mechanism I think?). Maybe there's such a thing for the miranda launcher too?

Multiple instances

Why would you want to run multiple instances? You can run multiples of specific protocols by copying them and renaming them.

I want to because I want them

I want to because I want them in different profile databases. Mainly because I plan to take one along with me everywhere where it's "unsafe", i.e. public computers and I don't want the other set of accounts to run the risk of being compromised basically.

You could say I want to keep their history logs with the accounts but don't tie both groups of accounts together.

What?

So I can have multiple email accounts for say MSN or Yahoo! in the one appliation, is this difficult to achieve without being "geeky" as it were?

Works fine here

Hi,

I use Miranda, running the launcher, and I can run multiple instances fine.

You need separate profiles for each one, but that's all. It should pop up the profile selector with a big red cross by the ones that are locked and in use.

As for what it does that isn't inherently portable.... nothing, really. The launcher is about making it PAF compliant - i.e. moving the user date (profile, settings, etc.) into the separate data folder so that it can be backed up correctly with the PortableApps.com backup tool.

What error are you getting when you try to launch the second copy?

That's...remarkable...

That's...remarkable...

Because I don't get an error, what happens is I start the first instance: I see the launcher splash screen and then it appears in my systray.

So then I click to start another, and I get the splash screen but all that happens is that it focusses the main screen of the first miranda instance and blinks it...

So basically it just seems to attach to that one and refuse to start a second one...

Was there maybe something of a config file for the launcher?

Or maybe it's because I don't have a second profile database yet... but how do I make one when the database manager screen never pops up. Shock

Don't tell me I first have to clone the first one just to get the profile selector...

Did some testing for you....

and you got it.

I removed all bar one profile from my MirandaPortable\Data\profiles folder, and launched MirandaPortable. It automatically loaded that profile.
When I relaunched it, it just popped up the existing copy.

So... I'd suggest that you close Miranda, copy the profile (just the .dat file) to another name in the same folder, and then launch it again. For me, that makes it pop up the selector so I can choose the one to use.

It works

Thank you very much, Jimbo, for taking the time to test it and help me out!

It works perfectly now (very nice how Miranda shows which databases are already loaded).
