Hi All,
I was wondering wether it would be possible to develop a PortableApps version of the freeware program Alcohol 52%.

I use it to emulate drives/mount images so that i do not have to burn them but can use them straight away.

This is closed source but it is freeware. So that in itself doesn't disqualify it from a launcher. However what does kill it is Alcohol installs a virtual drive which would require admin rights = ( It's a real pity as I have a lifetime license for the Alcohol 120% retail version which is a great piece of software. Would be mad to be able to take my games with me but alas that's the way the cookie crumbles.

I think the prerequisite of the virtual drive install to run the disk image from kills just about any app. Unless there is something that crates a virtual drive in the same way that Dosbox does and that can mount disk images.
However a further issue would be carrying around all your game installs virtually as otherwise you would need to install the game on each new pc you use. This would require admin rights which kills the idea.

Interestingly, I can't see why this action should require admin rights. If I plug in a USB drive, it does not have this requirement. It should be possible to make an application which could emulate the insertion of a disk.
Mounting an image to a virtual drive doesn't require admin rights. Installing the driver to make virtual drives does.

Yes, installing the driver for your USB device, which is the software component responsible for creating the drive letter, did and does require admin rights. It just happened way back when - when windows was installed.
What about U3? It works even if i do not have admin rights and 'to me' it seems it installs some sort of disc drive (at least it's different form a USB jumpdrive)
the USB controller chip tells the computer that it is actually to independant devices, a CD-ROM drive, which is handled by the already installed by an administrator CD-ROM driver, and a mass storage device, which is handled by the already installed by an administrator mass storage driver.
