AbiWord.exe was not found.

I've upgraded to the newest version of AbiWord but now I can't open it. I'm always getting this error: "AbiWord.exe was not found. Please check your configuration."

I've tried checking my settins but I don't see anything wrong.

All I did before upgrading was delete the old AbiWord because it had an Apps folder instead of the new App folder in version 2.4.5. I thought both folders weren't needed.

Can anybody tell me what I should do?

Use the new one

Use the new one entirely in its default config (blow your entire old one away... launcher, abiword binaries, etc). You can save your abiword prefs if you want (the abiword portable support page explains how). the directory layouts have changed, so your old launcher and old ini cannot be used.

John, Thanks for your

John,

Thanks for your reply.
I believe I deleted all files and folders belonging to the former installed version before installing the new ones. All that I have installed is from the newest version. Yet I'm getting this message as if some configuration settings were pointing to a wrong path.

Regards

You probably still have some cruft you don't know about from the old version of Portable AbiWord. Try unzipping AWP into a new folder. It should work. If it does, then that means you still have some old files from the previous version in the old folder. I'm guessing it's an old PortableAbiWord.ini that's causing the trouble (that's what it sounds like, anyway).

Hi Bruce,

I guess its like you say, but I can't find that ini that may be bothering. I tried placing the app inside a new folder called Abi but it didn't work.
I also unzipped the folder into my main pc and it doesn't work there neither but I don't know if it should work this way.
I'm completely lost at thi point.

What OS, INI file?

What OS are you using. And are you using an INI file?

I'm not using any INI file. At least none that I know of.

New Download

Start with a brand new download of the package from this site. Delete the old download and all old copies. You may have had some corruption.

I've already done that

I've already done that several times without results. I will try downloading and installing AbiWord from another computer to my Pen Drive. Maybe it will work that way and the problem is in my main computer.

Moving anything?

Have you moved anything at all? I've tested this on Windows 95, 98, 2k, XP, Vista and Wine within Ubuntu and it works fine everywhere.

I'll try and remember all

I'll try and remember all that I did:

I had Installed:

The Bat! Voyager
AbiWord
Torpark
KeePass password Safe
ClamWin
FileZilla

To tidy Up my PenDrive and since Torpark installes itself in the "root", I created a Torpark Folder and moved all of Torpark (exe and folders) inside the new folder.

I downloded AbiWord's and ClamWin's newest versions and installed them as usual. As I noticed that AbiWord now comes with an App Folder instead of the former Apps, I deleted the Apps folder.

Later that day I ran several registry cleaners.

After all this I tried all the new updated apps and ClamWin worked but AbiWord didn't. I tried, deleting the new AbiWord, and installing it again; didn't work. Tried placing it into a a different folder; nothing. I may have tried other things witout results.

No Apps Folder

AbiWord Portable has never shipped with an Apps folder. That was something used for the old release of the Portable Apps Suite only. Everything within AbiWord Portable is self-contained in a single AbiWordPortable directory. You extract it, it creates a single AbiWordPortable directory and, in there, only AbiWordPortable.exe should be executed. It sounds like you're mixing this new release up with an old install of the suite, which you should not do.

John: Is there a way of

John:

Is there a way of knowing what should be included in the new AbiWord version; for instance, where should AbiWord.exe be? Should it be inside the /bin folder or that folder should only contain a lot of .dlls?

Structure

It's setup like this:

/AbiWordPortable <-- AbiWordPortable.exe lives here
--/App
----/AbiSuite2
------/AbiWord
--------/bin (AbiWord.exe is in there)
------.. other AbiWord directories
--/Data
----/settings (where your settings go)

These directories CAN NOT be changed unless you fully read the readme.txt included in Other\AbiWordPortableSource and use an appropriate INI file.

That is what I suspected.

That is what I suspected. The AbiWord Upgrade I have downloaded don't have the .exe in the /bin folder. It must be something with my computer since it has worked for everybody except for me.

I'll try downloading it with another name... if that doesn't work, I'll have to do it from another computer and try to fix the one I'm using.

AntiVirus

It's probably your antivirus. It's set to delete threats. And it probably isn't telling you. Most likely AntiVir or Avast, both of which have issues with false positives. Either way, it's that PC that's the problem.

You're right. It is my antivirus. I'm using Panda Platinum 2006 Internet Security.
Somehow, today as I tried to open both the exe and the zip, Panda's Truprevent advised me of a Virus and "neutralized" bot the abiword.exe in the exe and the zip files.
I sent them the files and I will wait for their reply. If they don't reply soon I'll just lower the heuristics in Panda.

Thanks for your help and sorry for all the nuisance!

Sigh

I'm really starting to hate antivirus programs. ClamAV had a false possitive a couple times but were responsive in getting it fixed and there haven't been problems since then. AntiVir and Avast have had multiple issues with false positives in both the launchers and the compressed EXEs over the past couple years. This is the first issue with Panda I've heard of... but it isn't as popular as the others, so I would guess fewer people use both Panda and PortableApps.com. I can't believe any antivirus would be so bad as to auto-delete something without notifying the user prominently.

This is why I avoid antivirus programs like the plague and just watch what I download. Even despite having used IE for a long time before I switched to Firefox, I've never gotten a virus save for the MSBlast worm, and that doesn't really count since you didn't have to do anything to get it.

I got an answer from

I got an answer from Panda:

"Dear customer,

After checking in PandaLabs the content of the message you enclose, this is the result:
The file c:\...\...\....\...\AbiWord.exe] contains no malware. The warning of the antivirus is due to the heuristic analysis, that warns you of several typical patterns of viruses such as being compressed, wrong date or time, etc... but this does not mean the file is infected, it is only a precaution.

In order to be able to use your file again if the antivirus has moved it to the hospital by the antivirus, go to Hospital - Quarantine and select the suspicious file that you had sent us, and hit on disinfect and restore

To avoid any further detection of this kind while scanning your computer, you can configure your antivirus deactivating the heuristic scan option."

This is good news but doesn't mean the problem is solved with Panda...

Stop using heuristics

Any product that has heuristics that move files without warning you and has false positives like this... you should disable the heuristics.

Disabled heuristics (temporarily), downloaded the app, installed... enjoying it again.

Thanks.

Update: I can use the app as

Update:

I can use the app as long as I have heuristics disabled, as soon as I enable it, it automatically sends the abiword.exe to quarantine. As I want to be able to have both, I've sent a mail to Panda asking for their help. I will keep you updated.

Heuristics can be unreliable

The heuristics in many antivirus products are simply unreliable. For the most part, they will do more harm (preventing you from using legit software) than good (catching a new worm before a definitions update comes out). I use Kaspersky because they're so good at promptly updating definitions (several times a day in some cases). I suggest either keeping Panda's heuristics disabled permanently, or setting it to prompt you before taking action. A product automatically deleting or moving files without asking the user is just poorly though out in my opinion.

AbiWord.exe was not found

just getting into using USB drives as portable utilities.
having to keep up to date with updates can be a hassle, but not as much as with MS products of course.
Still, am trying to install tools for abiword portable but no matter where i ask it to install the tools, it comes back with that "abiword.exe was not found" message. can double click on the abiword icon to start the program, and that's the .exe file isn't it, (also won't install into any other directory).
Help!
