I found it really useful and is not required to install does a great job, sometimes in external drives can encrypt a 3GB but in your own computer can be more.

TC is not open source.
BTW, I run all my portablapps from a TC container
Look at the top header on the main page. http://www.truecrypt.org/

Once you go portable...
They don't use a GPL license, and it requires admin-rights to install the filter driver once, which is not garanteed to be granted to all users, especially in a corporate environment or a locked-down system.
It also requires admin rights.
Thus not portable.

TrueCrypt does not require admin rights !!!
When you download and install it can be choose to un-compress then you can move the folder to some other place... its a great tool and I think deserve to be included in PortableApps.
Truecrypt most definitely does require admin rights.
Either it must be installed by an administrator
Or it can be run in traveller mode by an administrator
It needs a driver installed, which can either be done in advance (needs admin) or can be done on-the-fly for traveller mode (still needs admin)
I use it myself, and extensively where I work. Excellent software.
Yeah TC does definitely need admin rights but in a pinch you could use TCExploer (it runs portable, YAY) which doesn't need admin rights. Not perfect but for us like truthseeker, it's handy to have around outside the TC container. You could always copy your portable app out, use it, then delete it when finished.
As i said, not perfect, just passing info along (:
TC not GPL'd or similar
But that doesn't mean that it can be repackaged and redistributed. Here is the license, if someone wants to read it. I'm too tired to understand legalese.

I found that if I use keyfiles I can not open containers with TCExplorer as I can not point it to the keyfile, or am I missing something?
also which version of TC and which version of TCE you have?
The TCExplorer is supposed to work with TC version 4.someting correctly and not with the present versions
