Downloading Now

Yeah! I've been waiting for this one. I'll start giving it a run-through, but if nothing's changed from the Dev release, than this one is ready to go in my opinion.

Your new APPDATA handler

Your new APPDATA handler works great!

One question though....why rename the Data/settings/Application Data/ directory to Data/settings/InkscapePortableAppData/ on close?

Backup

I made it always rename to ${NAME}AppData on close so that when users backup their portable apps' data, it will always have the same name.

One thing that is potentially a problem with this, if the launcher gets prematurely killed, it'll never be able to use the same set of settings (other than on the same machine) again unless the user renames it... maybe I should save the current location in the INI file and check for it on startup. Yeah, I think that this is probably a good idea for something to do in AppDataRedirect.nsh.

AppNameAppData

Can't it be AppNameAppData all the time? Renaming it back on exit may be an issue if there is a crash or the drive is pulled for instance.

No, but I'll work on a fix.

It can't be AppNameAppData all the time, as it's got to be the appropriately named subdirectory/ies of USERPROFILE, e.g. "Application Data", "AppData", "AppData\Roaming". Otherwise the call returns null instead of the proper appdata path.

Renaming after is the real problem, if the launcher gets killed prematurely. So I need to fix that in AppDataRedirect.nsh.

AppData

I say just keep it as AppNamePortable\Data\settings\Application Data then and don't bother renaming it at all. There's no need.

Backup?

So depend on the INI file to tell it where it is for next time? The reason I'd renamed it after was for backups to the same place, so that it overwrites rather than leaving the other behind.

Now I remember that the Backup tool puts the date in anyway. So I'll remove that bit and replace it with an INI entry.

.
  • appinfo.ini: [Details] Publisher=Inkscape.org & PortableApps.com
  • There is a file "\Data\settings\InkscapePortableAppData\Inkscape\extension-errors.log". It says that all extensions failed to load because a dependency was not met. I appreciate your AppDataRedirect, but maybe it's to complicated.

Cheers

Not here

This doesn't seem to me to be relevant to the PortableApps.com build of Inkscape Portable. You should post that to the Inkscape website.

open files, command line-call

Hi!

I did some testing.

It seems to run stable, but:

If I try to open files (Menu Files -> open) the Desktop-Folder does not appear - as seen in Gimp-Portable.

If I try to open files directly via command line-batch file like:

@echo off
set LANG=NL
d:
cd "D:\Program Files\InkscapePortable"
start InkscapePortable.exe "%1"

the starter doesn't handle the "%1" correctly.
(e.g. use win-explorer "open-with"-dialog for an svg-file and open it with the batch-file).

I didn't see no further problems during usual usage.

Tested on WinXP SP2 (restricted account).

Thanks to all for your great work!

Thanks

The default open location is an issue with Inkscape itself, but I'm seeing if I can deal with it in any way with my launcher. The real problem is I can't use a ${ConfigWrite} line, as the XML tag it uses is on multiple lines. I'll need to investigate further, or maybe into an XML plugin. I have thought about this though.

I personally have no problems with opening a file, but from memory, it's one of the apps where you must include an absolute file name. I'm working on a fix for this for my generic launcher, but for the moment you need to live with it.

opening files

If I launch the program with inkscape.exe directly en then use the open files dialog, it's there (on the left side under places the "desktop"-entry).

I just tell because as with other programs i use it often to easy find back or load saved files.

But never mind - IT'S WORKING! GREAT!

I see.

I see what you're meaning. What I'm intending to do when I get round to it is try and sort out bookmarks - so at the bottom of the list you can have your portable documents and pictures directories, which should be more useful. As for the settings directory appearing rather than e.g. Desktop, that's a side-effect of the portability technique used. At the moment, I can't even remember clearly what I did with that for Pre-Release 1, whether it was setting USERPROFILE/APPDATA (I think that was it) or invalidating APPDATA and setting HOME (what should be being used for PR2)

Are you intending to move to 0.47 for the next PR?

Inkscape is set to release its next big update in a few weeks. I think they are pretty tight on schedule, so I'd bet that you can expect to see it close to then.

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.

Not sure

It depends entirely on whether I get round to making another release before then Smile

Yes, I have been following the Inkscape release schedule. I'm looking for 0.47 to be a quick pre-release and then finally move on to official.

Yea!

I'll be very happy to test it once you get it out. Thanks again for doing this - use it every day at work.

Improvement!

Great news! Thanks to catching Jon Cruz, an Inkscape developer, in IRC/XMPP, and working out what I reckoned should be added, despite the freeze in place, I got my patch committed! So when Inkscape 0.47 comes out, I'll just be able to set the environment variable INKSCAPE_PORTABLE_PROFILE_DIR to $EXEDIR\Data\settings, and it should all work Smile Due to this, I won't be releasing another pre-release here until 0.47 gets released (though I'll probably download a nightly build and test it), which if they're still sticking to their release schedule will be on the 15th of June - Monday week. I'll then get a release out here ASAP and we should be ready to go official. Smile

See inkscape.cpp revision 21480, lines 1387-1391, and the bug for details on the patch.

Soon

Just wait for 0.47 (see my comment above) on June 15 (DV), and then we should be able to get a quick release out, maybe the 16th or 17th with some testing.

Nearing release!

Hot diggity! Thanks for the update, and glad to hear you got to patch commit in. I am design-impaired, but still love Inkscape. I'll be snagging this as soon as the official release and your portable update come out. Thanks for working on this.
