I can't seem to get the GIMP help files to work. They installed fine, but GIMP doesn't seem to know where they are - did I put them in the wrong place?
They are at: \PortableApps\GIMPPortable\help
There's another help folder at: \PortableApps\GIMPPortable\Other\Help

I too am having this issue. Ive downloaded and installed GIMP portable and the help files a few times now but no luck Does anyone know what the issue is?

I juggest you tra it again with a clean install. That eans delete the whole /GimpPoerable/App folder, reinstall Gimp Portable and then install the official help package.

Thanks for the thought, but I was hoping for something a bit more targeted at the actual problem than "wipe it clean and try again"!
My 25 other applications installed and run just fine (including ones added after GIMP Help) - so is it my PortableApps environment, or the single package that doesn't work?
For all the effort that it will take to do that, I'll live without GIMP help!
The Gimp Help Package is for Gimp 2.4.*.
A new version hasn't been released yet.
You could use the online help till the new version is out.
the app prompts for them the first time you choose to use a help file. If you select the"internet browser" button you´ll see the local helpfile within the system´s browser -> the choice for the gimp browser leads to nothing because that tiny 22k help browser file is missing( see below)in the recent package. But anyway you should get the help files, if you start with "help" or F1.

official help module. The path is \PortableApps\GIMPPortable\App\gimp\share\gimp\2.0\help ,but you can check the helpfiles by "edit/preferences/help files"in the GIMP menu, the window shows whether you have the GIMP Help installed or not.
The help files you looked for are the ones for the "portable" part refering to the PortableApps page..
EDIT: helpbrowser.exe is missing in ..\app\gimp\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins folder
Solution: had an old Portable GIMP 2.41 copy, just copied the helpbrowser.exe to the new Gimp -> works...;)

I've updated my local GIMP install to 2.6.1. The helpbrowser.exe is missing there too. Maybe the file will be included in the new Help packages (portable and non-portable). Otherwise your Workaround works great.

well, same problems as mentioned above. Installed the official help-file (Gimp_Portable_Help_2.4.0_.paf.exe)into the mentioned path:
when hittin' F1 or clicking "Help", there is a popup mournin' that the expected path to helpfile doesn't exist, or helpfile doesn't exist within that path.
The needed file is in the expected location/path, it is possible to open it with the internet-browser;
what the hell is the hook, not being able to open a help within an application? Why is there an unecessary
plugin-browser with obvious malfunction and no chance of haulin help onto screen - ?
Sorry, but such things get my nerves, really. I'm no pc-specialist and just want to have basics running. A helpfile unable to start is not a helpfile at all...?!!Is there any workaround to have access to help with F1?

Gimp help wasn't up to date for 2.6.
I believe the help linked to on this site is only compatible with 2.4. A way to be sure would be to download the regular Gimp (Non portable 2.6) and temporarily install it to your home pc. Test if the help works by default there or if the downloadable help package (from the regular Gimp site) works.
If you do this please report back into this thread as, evidently, there are many others who have had this question.
