I just downloaded the latest pidgin and tried to install it then realised I had it running.
Is there any way the installer can be made to know and tell me like normal windows applications?

The installer checks if the application is running and won't let you install if it is. Was that not your experience with it?
As for requiring previews before posting threads, that's intentional, so that you can see if you've made any mistakes, which is quite common when creating threads, especially in the Beta Testing forum where they always have HTML tags; it's easy to miss closing one or something like that. That restriction won't be going.

I cannot quote you but yes, it did check if it was running I guess it's not really very friendly and nothing in the installer says to close the program beforehand.
I suppose it's not really designed for the regular user but only advanced programmer person unlike myself who is average ability.
P.S. Save is there but only after 1st post, I don't see a problem with changing it to how any normal forum works unlike this place.
Did you run it directly? Or did you run it from the PortableApps.com Menu or Updater? If the latter, I think there me a bug where it misses the check if running. I'll get on that if you can confirm.

Briefly, I run the menu minimized and then if I navigate an arbitrary shortcut it brings it into focus.
Once in focus I use the menu in the normal way.
As for installing applications I normally use the menu but I had the program in this case, Pidgin already running and my thought was that it was trying to update resources which were in use.
All I could ask as an End User is for a friendly message in this instance or alternatively something in the installer page that says to exit the application prior to installation.

I'm asking whether you ran it from the menu or not as the current installer skips a couple pages and handles things automatically. Normally, the first page of the installer says to close open applications (though most people just click next without reading it since every installer says welcome and be sure to close stuff). And it's checked on the exit of the page where you select the directory.
We're automating more and will be skipping these steps for most installs from the menu and updater going forward, though. So, it looks like it's what I thought and it missed it due to that. It'll be fixed in the next installer release coming tomorrow though the few apps with the current 0.90.1/0.90.0 installer will have this issue.

It is the menu from whence I installed the application in this case.
So since you have the "installer" coming up in News, does this mean if I download it again eg Pidgin 2.5.6 rv2 that it will have been changed or do you just wait until another version has been made of the appliction unto which you make portable.

It's not really a big enough deal to re-release the apps that are updated already. If we do, they get posted as a new revision / version #.

There's 2 things. The app launcher generator (which just creates the launcher) and the app installer (which creates the launcher and also creates all install info needed). But when I run the app installer it does NOT do what it's supposed to. When I run the app installer, it creates various directories and files, but does NOT transfer my app.exe to the App folder and put in the main folder the launcher in place of the app.exe. The app installer does NOT work.
Unless your app is already fully in PA.c Format, you can not package it using the PA.c Installer. There is some simplistic helper functionality built into the PA.c Installer but it will not fully build a PA.c Format app for you. The installer does not make apps portable. The installer does not move files around for you to put them in the proper place for PA.c Format.
Get your app in PA.c Format first, then use the installer.
