Eject problems with Windows 7 RC

I'm not certain whether this is a hardware issue or to do with PortableApps, but I thought I'd post it here in case anyone else is experiencing similar.

I run PortableApps on an OCZ Rally2 Turbo USB stick (4GB). I use it on two laptops - one running Windows XP, the other Windows 7 RC.

On the XP machine, all works as expected and when I eject the drive there's no problem.

On the Windows 7 RC machine, what always happens is this:

1. Right click on the PortableApps icon in the system tray and choose "Eject" (or left click on it and then click on the eject button at the bottom of the menu).

2. The PortableApps application shuts down and the Windows safely remove hardware box opens.

3. I select the Rally2 Turbo and select the option to remove it. At this stage I get a message saying that this is not a removable drive so cannot be ejected or removed.

4. I then go to the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the system tray, right click on this, choose the Rally2 Turbo and the drive is ejected without error or complaint.

This is not dependent on the particular USB device as I can reproduce the above with PortableApps running on a Kingston Data Traveler device.

Regards

Nick

..

"RC" means "release CANDIDATE" ..
You are using a BETA-OS - howcome you blame everything else
but your BETA-OS for the problems you have ?
If you want support for your BETA-OS, please contact m$ .

Wow, that was rude :-(

Wow, that was rude Sad

RC Candidate means just about ready for prime time.
John has worked on other issues relating to Win7 even though it is not Gold yet, because it IS coming, and can and does effect us.

He did not blame US for anything, he is making an observation and and wants to know if others are experiencing it. He mentioned it could be a hardware issue.

This was not a very welcoming message to a new member Sad

Hopefully other members who are using Win7 can give constructive feed back as to whether or not they are seeing this.

Tim

Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?

I will have to see on my windows 7 box if i can replicate this. I dont think the api for the regular windows click is any different from the platform call. I will look to nite. Thanks for the work you put into this.

Win7

Hi,

Did you wait some seconds before trying to release the USB drive? I ask because the platform could still be active in the background for some moments and then Win7 can show the "not remobable drive" message... it could be a problem of "messages", I mean, maybe the real message is "your drive is in use by another person/program"...

Just a cent!

Regards!

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report Biggrin

results

i was using the windows 7 rc release 64 bit edition, and i did not run into a problem like that at all.
I then attempted it with the 32 bit edition and that one worked as well.

However when i switched the drive and used my staples drive it did not work at all. The initial tests were done with a sandisk cruzer

I have the same problem,

I have the same problem, but:

if i just shut down portableapps without using the eject button, and go to normal windows icon to safely remove hardware, there's non problems. everything is fine.

BUT, if i use the eject button, to safely remove hardware windows open, and when i choose to stop i have the same error than you.

i suppose that it's a Seven problem, maybe x64 (i'm using it)

Same problem here

I have the same problem, with my 16GB JD FireFly and also with my portable hard drive. Can't eject the drive via the Safely Remove Hardware window (tells me the device can't be stopped because it isn't removable), but single-clicking the Safely Remove Hardware tray icon and selecting the drive usually works.

So this seems to be a bug in Win7 and depends on the drive. I'd report it to MS if I were you so hopefully it'll get fixed in the final.

Yeah...

Hey this happened to me too. It's probably a incompatibility error because it said that the device Portable apps was installed in was not a removable drive.

me too.-

I have the same problem but I find it more complicated...

1. My autorun.inf doesn't work, even right click doesn't show "run portableapps.com", it only shows open and explore...

2. The same problem that you have to remove the drive.

3. A U3 drive doesn't load the U3, and the rest is password protected so...

4. A portable Hard Disk that was connected when I installed Win7 should be connected each time now or I can't open/explore any window/folder including Control Panel.

The worst thing is that the system don't find any error so it's not directly reported to M$... I sent a mail manually reporting this to M$.

BTW, the same problems (1 and 2) happened this afternoon in a friend's laptop running Vista... : (
