How does one get Thunderbird Portable to work behind a firewall and proxy? I have no problems using it a home but at work it will not. I have set the proxy options the same as I use for Firefox but it still will not connect.

Are you sending or receiving mail? - Many times the standard SMTP port (25) is blocked.
What email server are you connecting to? (e.g. GMail)
Do you happen to know what firewall they are using?
One thing to try - Disable the proxy settings in Thunderbird (e.g. Direct Connection). Where I am, port 80 (web traffic) is blocked and you must go through the proxy, but other ports are not. (For example, I could open an SSH-port 22 session, or do VNC without a proxy also.)
I hope this helps. - BTW, welcome to PortableApps.com
If receiving mail doesn't work, then that most likely means that your work firewall blocks port 110 (POP). While there are verious things that you can try to get around that, Portable Apps are not about helping you circumvent workplace restrictions.
If you are allowed to do that at work, your IT team will be able to tell you how. If you're not allowed to do it, then you shouldn't be doing it.
