I have wrote extensively about Spread32, but it doesn't work with Excel, so I am putting out a call for someone to either find or create a spreadsheet with Excel read/write and some functionality. It shouldn't be bloated with stuff I don't need, it should be lean. Other people have requested this, so I think that there is really a genuine interest in this. Reply with ideas.

Thanks Justin, for breathing some life into the "Portable Spreadsheet Application Initiative"
The only open-source spreadsheet application I could find that was fully compatible with Excel was GNUMERIC at {www.gnumeric.org}. I hope John will be able to make this portable.
PS: Does any application (in general) need to be open-source, for John to create a portable version?
It does have to be open-source. As for Gnumeric, I already discussed that with him, it will not work because of some inherent problems with the program. (link below)

I know I'm joining late but is there any reason why Portatble OpenOffice Calc won't work? I've had great luck with it.
There isn't, but you have to get the whole suite, and I have no interest in the Presentation, Drawing, or Database programs. That's why I have a stand-alone word processor, and this thread is dedicated to finding a good stand-alone spreadsheet app. I do love OpenOffice, but I don't want to waste space on things I won't use.

Like I said, there isn't much space difference between having a full install of OO.o vs just Writer and Calc. All told, you'd save a grand total of about 9MB. And it would be one more distribution for me to maintain. (The largest one... that takes me an hour to upload to SourceForge for every release). So, there's really no harm in just using Portable OO.o.

I always like to find alternatives. The goal of this is to hopefully find a spreadsheet that is already portable, so it would mean no work for you. Finding such a program would mean 100% completion of our goal. Finding one you have to create a launcher for would not be as good, but it would still be better. As for the comment about not saving space, I don't use OpenOffice on my USB not because I don't want the extra apps, but I don't want to use that much room on something that could be replaced by a light word processor and spreadsheet combo. But that's the problem, Justin: there seems to be NO (Excel-compatible) spreadsheet - at least no (known) portable AND opensource/freeware one
How about throwing away all OO-helpfiles (to save maybe 20 MB) and with it - up to the time you find something better/ smaller

You are right. But that is what this thread was created to find. I was hoping if everyone cooperated, then we could find one. But if OOo gets small enough without the help files, I may just use that. However, I'll still try to find a stand-alone spreadsheet for those with 128MB drives.
