I've been planning on portablizing a small, fun game for inclusion in the Portable Apps Suite for a while now. And it hit me while playing Brain Age's Sudoku puzzles on my Nintendo DS the other day... why not Sudoku? Well, after searching through all the open source implementations, one seemed pretty solid. So, we now have Sudoku Portable. It's under 400k installed. Very fast. Has 4 modes of difficulty (Easy, Medium, Hard and Impossible). Allows you to enter possible solutions by holding the shift key down (only the regular numbers, not the numeric keypad). And it automatically saves your game between sessions. It's also got all the other features of the new apps including in-place upgrade support, Live CD compatibility (no changes needed after running it once), works on Windows 95 and up, and is even mostly compatible with Wine (it just won't save your game or settings when you exit).
Get the self-extractor here:
UPDATE: Sudoku Portable has been released
As usual, please don't share this outside the forums (it's hosted here for now) and please drop a note back with your testing results and thoughts.
Regards,
John
It has a game mode named "Impossible"? Well that's kinda pointless. If it's impossible, why would anyone want to play it? As such, I'd imagine "Impossible" mode isn't actually impossible. Would I be correct?

I tried one of the Impossible games on this Sudoku Solver just to see if it's impossible: http://www.sudokusolver.co.uk/
The Impossible ones are impossible if you solve purely by logic and no guess/check. If you use guess/check, however, then it's possible.
I just tried this and will try it at work tomorrow. Enjoyable puzzling but I gave the 'Impossible' level a miss. Use to have Desktop Sudoku, cost a couple off pound at the time. But this is just as good.
My misus likes Sudoku and is very quick at the Hard levels, going to get her to have a go on the Impossible Level LMAO.
Is there a Kakuru OpenSource around? That would be pretty good to have alongside this!
Dell XPS M1530 Laptop
Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 2.5GHz
4GB Ram
256MB GeForce 8600M GT
Please let me know what the misus thinks about it, too. Curious to see what a sudoku fan thinks.
What's Kakuru? Best I could find is a pibedal dinosaur... which would be tough to make portable.
UPDATE: I think you meant Kakuro aka Cross Sums. I'll look around.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Well, that was good for a laugh.
Yes, a bipedal dinosaur would indeed be tough to make portable, in part because dinosaurs are so freakin' huge, but also because they just so happen to be extinct.
Anyway, I gave this a go, even though I don't really like Sudoku all that much (I don't have the patience for it). Seems pretty solid. Really, there's not much to go wrong with it--the app consists of a single .exe file.
I would have tested it with an INI, but I'm too lazy. You may want to test INIs yourself from now on, John, because as you know, I've found a lot of INI-related bugs in various Portable Apps in the 30 months I've been here. That's part of the reason why my short-lived multi-user PFF launcher required an INI. This way there's less to go wrong, and the code is easier to write (less jumping around in the code to implement defaults).

I've been debating ditching the INIs and just keeping the apps in the new standard layouts. It wouldn't be now... but eventually. The next Portable Apps Suite will have the integrated menu, sync and backup. A later release will have eben more goodies (already working on it). So, there less reason to have custom directory layouts, especially since they just mean messiness codewise. I actually may just ditch the auto-hunt routines and keep the INIs. So it would only support the standard directory layout by default... or anything you want with an INI. Easier to test. Easier to support. And still flexible enough for anyone. But that's a whole nother forum topic and if you want to really get into it, please start one

Okay, I'll create a new thread... but where to put it? Hmm...

Crap, I just realized I said I'd been here for 30 months. This site hasn't even been around that long. I meant 30 weeks. I'm forever making that mistake.

I noticed one minor issue with the included SudokuPortable.ini file: _Firefox_Executable=sudoku.exe
Ok. I'll fix that. I had copied and pasted the INI from Firefox Portable.

Copy & paste is EVIL!

Agreed. Quite useful for programming, though. Don't know where I'd be without it.

You got there first
On the Sudoku Portable side, thank you so much! I love Sudoku!
I checked the code, just to make sure

Where did you get the game from?

I didn't have a problem on the company pc. The misus unfortunately has not had the chance to give it a go yet either. Will let you know when she has.

Very fast and slick. Didn`t find any bugs, though just gave it a quick check. However, you can adjust the given numbers by double-clicking on them a.k.a. cheating. I don`t know if it`s possible to complete the game when you do so or, as I`m not really into Sudoku if it is a common feature, thus intended.
Good choice for a first Game on portableapps. What about Chess next?

> Good choice for a first Game on portableapps. What about Chess next?
on my pen there already is a good chess program : NagaSkaki (http://www.mayothi.com/nagaskaki.html/)
AFAIK it's already a portable app.
Installing NagaSkaki
Unzip the file to any folder (e.g. c:\NagaSkaki)
To run NagaSkaki, double click on NagaSkaki.exe
an other portable chess program is bringer chess ( http://chess.kearman.com/bringer/bringer-index.html )
version 1.9 is old (2001) but works fine, especially if you download opening books.
both of those software are free to use, but i'm not 100% sure about licencing terms for redistribute etc etc.
NagaSkaki is a free, fully functional chess program for Windows 98, NT and XP. It is available for download and you are encouraged to distribute it to as many people as you want (as long as it's free!)
Not open source.

Thanks for the tip (NagaSaki). I`ll try it out. So far I used Slow Chess Blitz, seems to be portable out of the Box AFAIK as well. Freeware, not Open Source.
I think portableapps.com should stick to classics, when it comes to games, such as chess, backgammon or modern classics such as Sudoku. That`s what I meant to say with the previous post
