I can't get blender_2.49a.paf.exe to work and I've tried online support and that didn't help so can anyone else think of something that we might have missed?
Here is the Log over the conversation that support and I had. ( I'm pa5155, support ChrisMorgan)

When I start Blender Portable I briefly see a cmd window for blender.exe and then it disappears. The system is XP Pro, SP2. It's a work machine and I have admin rights, but there are some limits imposed by group policy.
The behavior is the same whether or not python is check during installation.
The following three messages appear in the system section of event viewer at every attempt:
"Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC90.CRT could not be found and Last Error was The referenced assembly is not installed on your system"
"Resolve Partial Assembly failed for Microsoft.VC90.CRT. Reference error message: The referenced assembly is not installed on your system."
"Generate Activation Context failed for W:\PortableApps\BlenderPortable\App\Blender\python26.dll. Reference error message: The operation completed successfully."
Perhaps this will help with debugging the problem some folks seem to be having with startup.
on other machine XP sp2 , german, restricted user
blender starts fine, python not installed.

I have read through the log you posted and the other reply's left here. I will my virtual machine up and running to check in XP and feedback shortly.
Addtionally 2.48, 2.48a, 2.49 where built with Python 2.5.2, whereas 2.49a was built with Python 2.6.2.
And further additional is that 2.48 onwards use msvcr90 whereas previous releases used msvcr71.
Edit 1:
Checked on a clean XP Pro SP3 and you are correct. It seems that they have removed the additional fileset that was included in 2.48a when it was compiled. I am obtaining all my versions from 2.48 and reviewing further. Will be back shortly.
Edit 2:
It was in 2.49 but missed in 2.49a. I placed the 4 files that were missing in the official release and it does work in the clean XP Pro SP3. The 4 files are: Microsoft.VC90.CRT.manifest, Microsoft.VC90.OpenMP.manifest, msvcm90.dll and msvcp90.dll from the 2.49 development release. I will get in touch with John hopefully soon to look into releasing an update.

Package and test it, then post it on a server somewhere and email me the link (or just send it via email) and I'll put it up as 2.49a Rev 2.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Just checking you got the email link I sent on 10/07/2009 16:46 GMT.

Just installed Rev2 and it works find under WINE (Crossover 8.0) on my Mac.
Given that (which also didn't work before), I'm sure it'll work fine on the work machine. I'll check Monday and report if there are any issues. No news is good news.
Thanks!

The rev2 version works on my computer. Thank you very much for making it so I don't have to take Italian lessons to use Blender.
I am glad to hear that we sorted your problem. It's always good to have feedback even when it is not good news. Helps and motivates to make sure the user experience is that bit more special the next time around.
