Portable calibre (eBook library)

Now that ebook readers start to be common, I suggest creating a portable version of Calibre (http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net/), an ebook library organizer which synchronizes with most popular ebook readers, and can be used also as an ebook reader and file format converter.

According to the developer, it's a "...one stop solution to all your e-book needs. It is free, open source and cross-platform in design and works well on Linux, OS X and Windows. calibre is meant to be a complete e-library solution and thus includes library management, format conversion, news feeds to ebook conversion, as well as e-book reader sync features and an integrated e-book viewer."

I have used it in my PC for a while now, and it works smoothly with my Sony PRS-700 ebook reader. It supports many document formats, including the EPUB standard, PDF, TXT, RTF and many more.

In my opinion, it's a perfect candidate to become a mainstream portableapp.

Unfortunately, I cannot help in the development. But you can count on me for testing, of course.

Interested

I'm interested in this thing, not so much because I've got a use for it (I don't) but because it looks like a pretty neatly made piece of software.

Preliminary results show that it stores some registry keys in the standard Qt sorts of places, but they're DLL versions and similar, in a key dependent on the install location, which I'm unfamiliar with. I'll need to investigate more.

Edit: even more interesting... calibre is "written mainly in Python with a few C extension modules" (here). Maybe it was the installer thingy which was Qt..?

Anyway, it stores its settings in APPDATA.

Edit 2: the Qt registry keys do get recreated when I remove them...

I built a first draft of calibrePortable

Thanks a lot for the tip kovidgoyal. Who better that calibre developer to guide us Smile

I read the thread and worked out a kind of PortableApp version. I created the official directory layout, copied calibre binaries, created the config directory, added the appinfo files (including some icons) and created a "kind-of" launcher in a BAT script. And... it all works just fine!!! It seems that nothing is left behind in Windows registry or any directory in the host computer.

So now the application looks like an actual PortableApps but without an actual launcher. It also weights a little (about 24MB compressed). Since I'm not a savvy developer, I could upload somewhere or send what I've already done to anyone interested in creating the launcher and compress the application.

I'll read through PortableApps site and will try to learn more about creating PortableApps. If I finally come out with an actual launcher I'll let you know Smile
