I've just posted a pre-release of 7-Zip Portable 4.42 and need some folks to test it out. For the unfamiliar, 7-Zip is a solid file archiver that supports 7z, Zip, RAR and several other formats. This release has many of the features of the other new apps, plus some new stuff:
Live CD Support - 7-Zip Portable fully supports running from a CD. Just extract it to your local hard drive, run it at least once and configure it to your liking, and burn it to CD.
In-Place Upgrades - 7-Zip Portable supports the ability to do what I'm calling an "in-place upgrade". This means that you can extract it right over an existing installation of 7-Zip Portable without losing any of your existing preferences and it'll Just Work (tm).
Partial WINE Support - You can install and use 7-Zip Portable within WINE. There will be some visual defects in the address bar (so you should go into options and enable the .. item to be able to browse up directories) and settings will not be saved between sessions. But it will work.
I was wondering what people thought of having 7-Zip default to a view of the root of the portable device by default. It's fairly easy to implement and might be handy. Any thoughts?

UPDATE (Aug 20): Pre-Release 2 has been posted. This fixes the error with the registry plugin on Windows XP and enables correct saving of data between portable sessions.
Thanks,
John

I love how 7-zip is a new word processor.
Edit: Actually, it's a word processor in more than one spot like in the readme and probably in some other places I haven't looked at yet.
I gotta work on my CopyNPaste skills.
I've posted a fixed version.

search 'n destroy - eh, find and replace work better that copy 'n paste, especially if you use the case-sensitive options...
Love the new 'word-processor', with built-in zip mangagment functions. Now, where's the spell checker?

"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate."
I have launched it twice and each time I go to File-Exit it says "7-Zip has encountered a problem and needs to close"
im getting the error also on xp
At the least, you can probably put it as an option in the ini file. Hm, why doesn't it default to the last viewed folder like mine does?
Also, that error messsage appears comes up on my machine when running your 7z Portable. It appears to be linked to the registry plugin. However, it's not present in my launcher for some strange reason.
I've posted a 2nd Pre-Release. This fixes the issue with the registry plugin in Windows XP and enables saving options between sessions. It also correctly allows multiple launches of the portable version while maintaining 7zip local's settings.

Everything works fine with me, I think you can can release a final version.
Everything seems to be working fine here.
