just wondering if anyone else is experiencing what I do, and if anyone knows the cause and a remedy.
Nearly every time I close *anything* in OpenOffice, it crashes, and starts file recovery + error reporting, apparently regardless of document type (.odt, .ods, .sxw, .doc, .pps, .xls...).
Instances when it rather consistently crashes:
- Clicking the [X] at the top right corner of the current document window
- Clicking "Close" in the Files menu
- Clicking [Close] in the Find dialogue
- Closing OOo with Alt+F4

If you previously used version 2.x, don't move that user profile into 3.x.

http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74&t=12426#... is a subtopic of the above, and mentions a problem when using a 2.x user profile in the 3.x software.
That has been shown to cause widely varying but very troublesome problems.
There are other, if unknown, ways for the user profile to go bad and similarly cause problems, even if you didn't upgrade.
The tutorial has info on how to clear things up. (of course, they speak in terms of the standard installed version and its user file location, but the concept is the same)

Not a bad idea to save a copy of a good user profile now and then in case it suddenly goes bad

... and installed it again from scratch (OpenOffice.org_Portable_3.0.1_en.paf.exe). Same problem still persists.
It asked me about name, registration data etc., so anything old seems to be gone.

Have you tried installing the 3.1 Pre-Release to see if that helps fix your issue?

Upon manually deleting the OOo installation directory, I got blocked despite making sure the usual culprits were closed (via Task Manager's detailed view).
Deduction left Copernic Desktop Search. Shut it down, reinstalled OOo, tested on a few documents. No problem.
Started Copernic, reran the tests -> crash.
Pretty much looks like it's Copernic.
...so now I'll have to find a replacement for that...

Try Locate32 or Everything for finding your files.
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
will have a look at them, especially their in-file searching abilities for various formats.

... a small program that hasn't been updated recently but works beautifully for me. It's just an .exe file so is portable by nature.

It works without indexing, and it searches file content in most of the popular text file formats, though specifically designed for OpenDocument formats: .odt, .ods, etc. It can also find any document type (not just text formats) by file extension.
o3find does have some limitations so it won't completely replace a more robust search tool, but it's very handy, fast and lightweight for those times you don't need complex search capabilities.
