Not sure if this is a bug or not :o)

Hi John.

I don’t know whether this is actually a bug or not. Even more so I don’t know if it is specific to Portable Thunderbird or not.

Since upgrading to 1.5.0.5. I had a lot of trouble getting it to work properly. I could send and receive mail but when I tried to open it I just got an “alert” message saying that the path I was actually using was not available. I could follow the path and it was indeed the one I was using.

After struggling with it for quite some time I have eventually discovered what the problem was. It’s a strange one ! :o)

On my flash drive I sometimes put “##” at the end of folder names so I can easily find them amongst a long list. I have always had ## at the end of my Portable Thunderbird folder as I regularly check it.

This has been ok until Portable Thunderbird 1.5.0.5. when all of a sudden this seems to cause problems. All I did was to rename the folder by removing the “##” and it worked !!

I have struggled so long with this and to find out it is something so simple is almost heart breaking ! Do you know why I have experienced this since it never used to matter with previous versions ?

Thanks for a great application John and I wish you well with all your work.

# $ and other oddball characters

These characters can cause issues with lots of apps and should generally be avoided. I'd be willing to bet that either Enigmail or Thunderbird may have an issue with those in the paths. Or perhaps NSIS itself does. Who knows. In general for folder names, it is best to stick with A-Z, 1-9, -, _, (, ), etc. I recommend avoiding $, #, @, $, %. Someone else found out that $ can interfere with one of the apps (not the launcher, the app itself) a while back, too.

Thanks

Hi John

Thanks for your reply. I wish you’d have been around the last couple of days as I was posting like crazy trying to get some help with this. It seems that no one else had a clue as I wasn’t able to get any response. I have deleted the post now so as to keep the forum tidy. That’s partly why I started this thread to prevent someone else suffering with it !

It is interesting though that the previous version of PT worked ok with the #’s ! They must have changed something recently !

Thanks again for your reply and thank you very much for your work particularly on PT !

Didn't see the path

I didn't see the path with the # in it, or I would have chimed in. I read your post, but had nothing useful to add, unfortunately.

Try a baseline copy of TBP and TBPwGPG and see if either have issues with the multiple accounts. If both do, it's either TB or NSIS. If only the GPG one does... then it's Enigmail or GPG. If you can figure it out, I'll drop a note in Known Issues about it so noone else gets nailed.

Hmm...

Hi John.

I downloaded the normal Thunderbird Portable (without Enigmail) and I had the same problem when the folder had a # in it’s name.

So I guess its maybe not Enigmail ? I don’t think the multiple accounts thing is relevant as I think I know how I may have wrongly got to that conclusion.

I was upgrading two friends versions of TBP as well as my own. They each have a single account and there upgrade went ok. Of course looking back now I thought it was a multiple accounts problem because mine was the only one having trouble. Where I think back now in fact it was because I was the only version with a # in the folder name !

It just shows how easily things can get mixed up !

So if this helps you at all TBP with or without Enigmail has the same problem. This didn’t happen in versions pre 1.5.0.5. I am also quite sure the multiple accounts thing has nothing to do with it.

Just as a side note I noticed a new outgoing server entry called 0x. I have not made this entry and strangely not only did it set itself as default but it had the same settings as my usual default outgoing server. All my other outgoing server settings were still there. Do you know what that means ?

OK I hope my little problem helps someone else avoid it. It was driving me crazy and I was beginning to question my sanity at various stages !

Thanks.

Can I tell you anything else that might help ?

Hi John.

Was the above what you wanted me to do ? Is there anything else I can tell you that will help future releases etc ?

My copy is still working fine by the way, now I have renamed it.

Thanks.
