Second, this actually is not legit. I was going to portablize this application, but Postbox does not allow it at this time as they haven't finalized their license.

Correct. Postbox is not an open source application like Thunderbird is, even though it is based on the Thunderbird 3 source code. Postbox is a closed source, commercial product that you will have to buy once it leaves beta. At that point, we'll work with them to make it available in PortableApps.com Format.

By definition, if it's based on an opensource product, it has to be opensource!
That sounds like the postbox guys are infringing the Thungderbird license - maybe this is something the authors of Thunderbird should chase up with them?
It's MPL.. Mozilla Public License. Which allows you to combine it with closed source stuff as long as any modifications to the open source stuff are kept under the MPL. Practically speaking, it means that you can take it and make it into a closed source app.

But that makes the MPL a bit pointless as an opensource license!
It means that you can take MPL code and do whatever you like with it as long as you release the original MPL code you used?!
From the MPL FAQ it's like if you use MPL'd code, and create a modified version - you don't have to release your modified version if you maintain a "patch" file, and your build process merges the original and "patch" file together before compiling it. As long as you don't save a copy of the merged version manually yourself>?!!
So much for software being free!

A classic case of "we want 29.95 per sale, so well ask for 39.95 and then 'reduce' it so our sucker customers think they're getting a 'good deal'"!
Personally, I'd be inclined to DUMP any software trying it on like that - especially when the FREE alternatives are so much better!
Thunderbird to the rescue!
I actually really liked postbox when I had a look at it. If it was OSS, I'd be using it now. I'd not shell out $30 for it when I could have Thunderbird though.
I wanted to use it and try out the touted features, it seems to have quite a few that would be cool, plus I like the UI...but I'm certainly not paying for it. *shrugs*
Just like John was talking about when allowing Commercial and freeware apps on here...it's not about the money...it's about the project.

I had a look at the Postbox website and saw that version 3 is available.
This email client looks good, so I want to give it a try.
Here a portable app would be fantastic, so I would not have to install anything.
Is it planed to pack the actual version as a portable app?

Then it will require John, or the developer, to initiate things.
John seems to have a lot on his hands these days, so maybe you could approach the developer with the idea, depending on how ready John is for commercial apps.
The free version of Postbox, Postbox Express, is a dead app and no longer maintained as of 2010. As it is based on an outdated version of Thunderbird, it has unpatched security vulnerabilities and should not be used by anyone. Postbox is only available as a paid, commercial app now.
